SUMMARY:After the Fire: Ecological Wonders in Burned Areas
DESCRIPTION:Date: Wednesday\, April 15\nTime: 6:00 – 7:30 p.m.\nLocation: Montana Natural History Center\nCost: $10 MNHC members/$15 non-members \nPlease join MNHC and Jane Kapler Smith for a fascinating look into post-fire landscapes and the wonders you can find there. \nREGISTER HERE. \nEvery square foot of dry land in our region has probably burned in the past thousand years. This heritage of fire has shaped every ecosystem in our wildlands; it has given us much of the diversity in wild landscapes that delights us; and\, over many millennia\, it has shaped our native species themselves. \nSo why not get into a burned area this summer and look for some of the botanical treasures that show up only in the first decade or two after fire? This lecture/demonstration can help you get ready for your summer explorations. Jane will suggest some recent burns to visit\, describe how to recognize differences in fire severity within a burn\, and show how plants can survive a fire and even have their best\, most productive years in the decades that follow. \nLight refreshments provided. \nAbout the instructor: Jane Kapler Smith has an M.S. in Forest Ecology from Colorado State University and a B.A. in English and Theatre from Alverno College\, Milwaukee. She worked in fire control and management in Glacier National Park during the 1970s. In the 1980s\, she completed research on fire effects in quaking aspen stands in northern Colorado. From 1992-2015\, she worked at the Fire Science Laboratory in Missoula\, MT\, developing literature reviews on fire effects (https://www.feis-crs.org/feis/) and an educational curriculum on wildland fire (https://www.frames.gov/fireworks/home). SUMMARY:Summer 2025 Master Naturalist Certification Course
DESCRIPTION:Summer (June) 2025 Master Naturalist Certification Course\nMONDAY\, June 2\, to FRIDAY\, June 6\, 2025. \nOur certification courses consist of at least 40 hours of instruction in a mix of lectures\, in-class labs\, and outdoor field trips. We’ll cover a wide breadth of topics with the goal of giving you an essential foundation of skill and knowledge on which you can build. Our summer session will focus on flower plants\, birds\, and insects. \nREGISTER HERE!\nThis is a five-day intensive course held in the summer each year. Class meets from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. each day. \nThis class is compressed into a short window of time so we will delve deeply into three subjects. Our focus will be on learning the core skills of identification of: 1) flowers\, shrubs and trees\, 2) birds\, and 3) insects. Instruction will also include time on local geology\, mammals\, fire ecology\, and riparian ecology. \nInstructors: \nChristine Morris\, Community Programs Coordinator and naturalist. Christine teaches the spring and fall Montana Master Naturalist courses\, the Certified Interpretive Guide course\, and coordinates adult programs and lectures. \nGuest instructors may include Elena Ulev\, naturalist\, and Geoff Farinholt\, BLM. \nWe’ll take full advantage of the summer season and spend most of our time afield. We will spend time in the cottonwood galleries of the river’s floodplain and venture to the conifer forest in Pattee Canyon. Get a handle on plant identification by recognizing patterns in form\, catch and identify butterflies along the Clark Fork River\, and recognize birds by song and sight. \n“The course has helped me to be more curious\, observant\, and connected with my surroundings. I’ve met people who share this passion\, their experiences\, and curiosity with whom I can wander and wonder.”– 2023 Program participant \nMaster Naturalist Certification Requirements: \n\nThe main project for this class is keeping a detailed naturalist handbook with species list. To get the most out of your experience\, you should expect to spend a little time in the afternoon reviewing and organizing your daily notes\, and tracking your observations.\nFull attendance.\nComplete the culminating exercise.\n\nPlease Note:\nThis is a university-level class. A significant amount of information is covered in 5 days. It is fun!—but also work to be proud of and take seriously. \nSample June Itinerary: Monday (flowering plants at Pattee Canyon)\, Tuesday (birds at Lee Metcalf)\, Wednesday (conifers and ecology at Lolo pass)\, Thursday (Insects at Greenough Park)\, Friday (Final exercise). \nREGISTRATION INFORMATION: \n\nCost: $425 for members; $450 for non-members\nWe are able to offer some scholarships. Or marvel in the diversity of lichen. Spend an entire day identifying winter raptors in the Mission valley. Become attuned to bird songs and butterfly wings. Get a handle on flower identification by recognizing patterns in form. Our emphasis will be on learning how to identify local flora\, fauna\, and landscape processes while gaining insight on how each part is connected. \nKnowledgeable guest instructors include botanist and author Peter Lesica\, botanist Greg Peters\, birder Chadwick Moore\, MNHC editor Allison De Jong\, and conservation biologist Erim Gomez. \nThe class will be be based at the Montana Natural History Center.
