DESCRIPTION:Date: Friday\, October 23rd\nTime: 4:00-6:30 p.m.\nLocation: Meet at MNHC and we’ll bus over to the Univesrity\nCost: $20 MNHC members/$25 non-members \nNow is your chance for an insider’s look into some of UMZM’s most captivating specimens! \nREGISTER HERE! \nJoin us for a tour of the Philip L. Wright Zoological Collection at the University of Montana\, led by curator Katrina Derieg! Participants will get up close and personal with specimens from around the world while learning about how museum collections contribute to cutting edge science. \nThe UMZM is the repository for vertebrate specimens collected by University of Montana researchers\, as well as specimens from the Montana Natural Heritage Program\, the Montana Natural History Center\, Flathead Lake Biological Station\, the Montana Department of Fish\, Wildlife and Parks\, and various affiliated researchers and groups in the region. While the UMZM focuses on birds and mammals of the northern Rocky Mountains\, it is also home to scientifically and educationally valuable specimens from around the world. The museum has a growing number of tissues\, parasites\, photographs\, and other materials for documenting and studying patterns of biodiversity across space and through time. \nPair this tour with Katrina’s lecture on Montana Mammals at MNHC on October 21st! Learn more! \nABOUT KATRINA DERIEG: Katrina is a museum professional and mammalogist whose work bridges systematics\, natural history collections\, and public-facing science. She is currently Curator and Museum Collections & Outreach Coordinator at the Philip L. Wright Zoological Museum at the University of Montana\, following five years as Collections Manager of Vertebrate Zoology at the Natural History Museum of Utah. Her research focuses on the systematics\, phylogeography\, and ecology of small mammals of western North America\, with broader interests in integrating natural history collections and community-engaged science. She received both her B.A. and M.S. in Biology from the University of New Mexico.

We look for bugs and birds\, color on rocks\, build with branches\, experiment with science tools and play with a variety of art materials. \nPlease bring clothes for outdoor play! SUMMARY:Saturday Kids' Activity: Sugar Skulls and Dia de los Muertos!
DESCRIPTION:Date: Saturday\, October 31st\nTime: 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.\nLocation: Montana Natural History Center\nCost: Free with membership/admission \nBe a part of our Dia de los Muertos ofrenda (altar)! At this special drop-in program\, kids and families can join artist Trini Fleming to create their own calavera (sugar skull) locust to add to the altar. Trini will be on hand to explain the various components of the exhibit and to help you add your own unique sugar skull locust to the ofrenda! \nThis special Saturday Kids’ Activity is paired with MNHC’s temporary exhibit that honors the Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). Created by former field staff Trini Fleming\, this exhibit includes a traditional ofrenda (altar) dedicated to a globally extinct species native to Montana: the Rocky Mountain locust. Once numbering in the trillions across Montana\, this keystone insect went extinct in the early 1900s\, likely due to human agricultural disruptions. Trini’s multi-tiered installation incorporates traditional elements (like paper marigolds) alongside native Missoula grasses and educational signage. Trini hopes to educate visitors on Dia de los Muertos and the concept of preventing a “second death” by promoting the memory of this lost key component of Montana’s natural landscape. \nAbout Saturday Kids’ Activities: Our drop-in Saturday programs feature activities\, art\, science experiments\, and more.
