SUMMARY:Saturday Kids' Activity: Geology Is Everywhere: Mount St. Helens
DESCRIPTION:Drop in any time between 1:00 and 3:00 p.m. for a hands-on kids’ activity! \nAttention\, (junior) geology enthusiasts! Join us for an exciting series of touch and learn sessions on geology. Master Naturalist and geology/earth sciences educator Jamie Watson will be leading these drop-in sessions the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of the month from April through July. \nGeology is everywhere! In May\, we’ll look at the effect the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens had on Missoula – yes\, the ash rained down here\, too.  Learn about volcanoes and igneous rocks! Bring your map from April’s activity (we’ll have more to pass out\, too)\, so you can add in the locations of the different kinds of rocks we’re learning about and go see them for yourself! \nCost: Free with membership / cost of admission.

DESCRIPTION:Date: Thursday\, May 30\nTime: 12:00-1:00 p.m.\nLocation: Montana Natural History Center\nCost: $5 suggested donation \nNational Geographic recently featured an article about seasonal pools in the Northeast that “teem with tiny life.” Nan Vance’s presentation will be about even tinier life here in the Northwest that even the most ardent wildlife biologists and naturalists tend to overlook. Insects are seen primarily as pests or food for wildlife\, unless\, of course\, they are harnessed to serve our needs. Nan will give us a glimpse of what Shakespeare aptly put: “For nought so vile upon this earth doth live but to the earth some special good doth give.” \nLearn about amazing insects during your lunch hour! Feel free to bring your food and eat while you enjoy the presentation. \nInstructor: Nan C. Vance was a lead Research Plant Physiologist\, USDA Forest Service\, Pacific Northwest Research Station. For over 15 years she published studies covering plant physiology and ecology\, pollination ecology\, and plant restoration in the Inland Northwest. Post-retirement: in the last 12 years she has spent as much time in the field as possible investigating native plants of the region\, and associated insects. With the help of field photography\, she advocates for better understanding and support of natural habitats and processes including those that influence the insects.

Our focus will be on learning the core skills of identification of:  1) flowers\, shrubs and trees\, 2) birds\, and 3) insects. Instruction will also include time on local geology\, mammals\, fire ecology\, and riparian ecology. \nInstructors: \nChristine Morris\, Community Programs Coordinator and naturalist. Christine teaches the spring and fall Montana Master Naturalist courses\, the Certified Interpretive Guide course\, and coordinates adult programs and lectures. \nGuest instructors may include Elena Ulev\, naturalist\, and Geoff Farinholt\, BLM. \nWe’ll take full advantage of the summer season and spend most of our time afield. We will spend time in the cottonwood galleries of the river’s floodplain and venture to the conifer forest in Pattee Canyon. Get a handle on plant identification by recognizing patterns in form\, catch and identify butterflies along the Clark Fork River\, and recognize birds by song and sight. \n“After completing this course\, I felt much more closely connected to my Montana home\, but the best part is being able to share my new naturalist skills with others so they can find their sense of place as well.”  ~2017 Master Naturalist \nMaster Naturalist Certification Requirements: \n\nThe main project for this class is keeping a detailed naturalist handbook with species list.
