Or marvel in the diversity of lichen. Spend an entire day identifying winter raptors in the Mission valley. Become attuned to bird songs and butterfly wings. Get a handle on flower identification by recognizing patterns in form. Our emphasis will be on learning how to identify local flora\, fauna\, and landscape processes while gaining insight on how each part is connected. \nKnowledgeable guest instructors include botanist and author Peter Lesica\, botanist Greg Peters\, birder Chadwick Moore\, MNHC editor Allison De Jong\, and conservation biologist Erim Gomez. \nThe class will be be based at the Montana Natural History Center. Travel to field sites will be by MNHC bus. \nRegistration Information: \n\nCost: $450/$425 members\nFull payment due upon registration.The course fee (minus a $100 administrative fee) is refundable ONLY if a cancellation is made 30 days before the first day of class.  No refunds will be issued for cancellations made after this deadline.\n3 UM credits available (pending approval). This course is listed at UM ENST 391. A $155 fee is required to the School of Extended and Lifelong Learning to take the class for credit. But finding the time to write can often be challenging. This writing “hush hour(s)” is designed to provide nature writers with a quiet\, supportive setting to work on your craft. This isn’t a workshop; this is space to write. \nIn this group\, we’ll spend roughly the first 20 minutes inviting individuals to share what projects you’re working on\, questions you might have about your work\, suggest resources\, any hurdles or writing blocks\, and writing successes! Then we’ll write\, write\, write. \nBring your notebook\, journal\, or computer. Writing prompts will be available if you’re feeling stuck\, or just want to play with words. DESCRIPTION:Date: February 8\, 2025\nTime: 1:00-3:00 p.m.\nLocation: The Barn at Teller\, 1180 Chaffin Ln Corvallis\, Montana\nCost: FREE \nJoin MNHC and Teller Wildlife Refuge for Poets in the ‘Root! \nNature in nearly all manifestations has inspired poets since there were poets! And at least since the Roman poet Horace wrote Ars Poetica or the Art of Poetry in 19BC\, literature\, including poetry\, sought to both instruct and delight. \nPoets in the ‘Root combines these two aims in an uncommon but simple way. One person reads a poem or part of a poem that uses an element of nature to convey its message. Then\, the same or another person gives an explanation (5 minutes max) of some aspect of that nature element. The explanation focuses on nature interpretation\, not literary interpretation. Listeners get a bit of poetry and a bit of natural history. \nThis is a FREE event\, but registration is required. \nWe’ll have refreshments\, including coffee\, tea\, wine\, and snacks! \nAnyone can volunteer to read poetry and/or offer the nature interpretation. This is a fun way for Master Naturalists to earn credit towards their certification. Poole! \nJason has worn many hats: Adjunct Professor of Paleontology\, scientific illustrator\, art teacher\, and paleontology field instructor. He has excavated dinosaurs on three continents\, including Africa and South and North America. Paralititan\, Dreadnoughtus\, and Suuwassea are three dinosaurs Jason has worked on; all were new to science when discovered and two are supermassive titanosaurs. Jason is also a Paleontological Artist who’s been published in National Geographic and whose art work appears in many museum and private collections. \nJason resides in Missoula and can often be found sketching in the studio and the great outdoors. Or you may find him at MNHC: Jason has taught various drawing and painting classes\, has hosted lectures on Montana’s ancient past\, and is currently spending Tuesdays-Fridays at MNHC preparing and conserving 150-million-year-old dinosaur fossils collected by Elevation Science Institute in Carbon County\, Montana\, during the 2024 field season. \nSigned or personalized copies of Jason’s education and coloring books will be available for purchase (authored by Jason P. Time to contemplate ice ages and glacial lakes.Time for the Glacial Lake Missoula Chapter of the Ice Age Floods Institute’s Cabin Fever Lecture!  Warm up your curiosity about those iconic strandlines we can see from town with a lecture from renowned geologist James W. Sears. \nNew “LiDAR ” mapping techniques may imply that the famous Lake Missoula strandlines on Mount Sentinel and Mount Jumbo record only one draining of the ice-age lake. The draining coincided with massive erosion at the bottom of the lake\, but passive lowering of lake level at the top\, marked by short-term strandlines cut a few inches into thin colluvial soil on the mountainsides. \nAbout the Instructor: Dr. James W. Sears received his PhD from Queen’s University\, Canada\, in 1979\, and has taught at the University of Montana since 1982. He researches the structure and tectonics of the Rocky Mountain region. Jim has authored dozens of publications and geologic maps.

No prior experience is necessary. Please just bring your open mind – a willingness to experiment and think in new ways. \nThis refreshing four-hour evening workshop is an invitation to explore both our interior and exterior ecosystems\, paying attention to the quiet or invisible things all around us. We will imagine the different ways in which humans and animals receive and send messages\, and how those messages traverse time and geography. We’ll consider how messages are stored in individual and collective memories\, in landscapes\, and in water. \nWe will discuss the benefit of taking notes – field notes and observations\, as well as notes from our interiors – considering two distinct spheres of noticing. We will explore strategies for “unsticking” our creative selves\, even on the darkest of winter days. Calling on poetry\, science\, images\, and our own imaginations\, we will spiral between internal and external systems\, exploring new forms and sensations in our physical bodies\, our thinking minds\, and our creative work. \nYou can expect to come away with material to spark future writing projects. You will receive a reading and resource list one week before the workshop\, meant to orient you and offer context for our time together. You will leave the workshop connected to an emerging community of local writers and creators. \nInstructor Chandra Brown is an educator\, river guide\, and writer originally from Alaska. She has worked within the realm of river conservation since her 2010 Fulbright grant to Ecuador\, and she founded Freeflow Institute in 2017. Her stories can be found in places like Adventure Journal\, The Dirtbag Diaries\, Kayak Session\, NRS\, and Patagonia. Chandra earned her M.S. in Environmental Studies from the University of Montana and has called Missoula home since 2014. \nLight refreshments provided. MNHC teaching naturalist Ryan Mahar is running the show and is excited to host another fun trivia night. \nThis is a FREE event\, but registration is required so we don’t overcrowd the space! \nREGISTER HERE!\nBYOB and snacks. \nHow does Naturalist Trivia Work? \n\nCome with a team or join up with new friends when you arrive. MNHC staff will help you find a table.\nThere are usually 4 rounds of questions each frequently on a common theme such as “Montana cats” or “poisonous plants.” Some rounds are verbal\, others are visual\, or auditory (guess that bird call!).\nAfter each round the answers are divulged and a score for each team is displayed.\nTwo hours later there will be a winner!

SUMMARY:Sip & Sketch: Create a Phenology Wheel
DESCRIPTION:Date: Wednesday\, December 18th\nTime: 7:00 – 9:00 p.m.\nLocation: Montana Natural History Center\nCost: $30 for MNHC members\, $35 for non-members \nAre you looking for a reflective\, inspiring\, fun new project for 2025? Start a daily phenology wheel! Phenology is the study of change in the natural world – when flowers bloom and go to seed\, when birds migrate\, when trees leaf out\, when butterflies emerge\, when the snow falls\, and so much more. Taking a few minutes each day to observe and record these changes can add up to something truly beautiful over time\, and we’d love to help you get started. And there’s no better time than just before the beginning of a new year! \nDuring this program you’ll create the template for your daily phenology wheel for January 2025\, and ponder the possibilities for how you’ll fill it in come the new year. You can experiment with colored pencils and other media\, practice different forms of lettering\, and look at various examples of other naturalists’ phenology wheels for inspiration. \nWe’ll provide drawing paper\, colored pencils\, watercolor pencils\, drawing pencils\, micron pens\, templates\, and rulers for you to use during the program\, but please feel free to take along your own favorite art materials. (A compass and protractor\, if you have them\, can also come in handy!) You may also want to purchase a sketchpad for this project (we recommend a larger size\, 8.5″x11″ or 9″x12″)\, but you can easily paste or tape your template into your own sketchbook later. \nTicket includes two beverages! We’ll have alcoholic and non-alcoholic options available.  \nAbout the instructor: Allison De Jong is the Communications Coordinator and Editor of Montana Naturalist magazine at the Montana Natural History Center. She has no formal art training but has picked up a thing or two about nature journaling in her 15 years at MNHC\, and is proof that anyone can learn to keep a nature journal or phenology wheel! She began her first phenology wheel in January 2021\, and has been phenologizing daily ever since. SUMMARY:Canada's Ancient Amazon River and Its Rocky Mountain Headwaters
DESCRIPTION:Date: Wednesday\, December 11\nTime: 7:00-8:00 p.m.\nLocation: Montana Natural History Center\nCost: $7 for MNHC members\, $10 for non-members \nGET TICKETS! \nGeologic evidence shows that before the ice age\, a river the size of the Amazon once flowed from the Montana Rockies north to the Canadian Arctic. Continental glaciers overrode and destroyed the river in Canada\, and diverted its Montana headwaters to the Mississippi. The great river’s delta survived the ice age in the Labrador sea ice\, with tell-tale sediments eroded from its lost headwaters. At its greatest extent\, about 18 million years ago\, the river reached south to the Colorado Plateau and Great Basin\, but its headwaters were cut off piecemeal by tectonics\, volcanism\, and glaciation. This lecture\, given by geologist Jim Sears\, traces the Amazon’s twin from its origins to its destruction. \nAbout the Instructor: Dr. James W. Sears received his PhD from Queen’s University\, Canada\, in 1979\, and has taught at the University of Montana since 1982. He researches the structure and tectonics of the Rocky Mountain region.
