SUMMARY:Sip & Sketch: Create a Phenology Wheel
DESCRIPTION:Date: Wednesday\, December 18th\nTime: 7:00 – 9:00 p.m.\nLocation: Montana Natural History Center\nCost: $30 for MNHC members\, $35 for non-members \nAre you looking for a reflective\, inspiring\, fun new project for 2025? Start a daily phenology wheel! Phenology is the study of change in the natural world – when flowers bloom and go to seed\, when birds migrate\, when trees leaf out\, when butterflies emerge\, when the snow falls\, and so much more. Taking a few minutes each day to observe and record these changes can add up to something truly beautiful over time\, and we’d love to help you get started. And there’s no better time than just before the beginning of a new year! \nDuring this program you’ll create the template for your daily phenology wheel for January 2025\, and ponder the possibilities for how you’ll fill it in come the new year. You can experiment with colored pencils and other media\, practice different forms of lettering\, and look at various examples of other naturalists’ phenology wheels for inspiration. \nWe’ll provide drawing paper\, colored pencils\, watercolor pencils\, drawing pencils\, micron pens\, templates\, and rulers for you to use during the program\, but please feel free to take along your own favorite art materials. (A compass and protractor\, if you have them\, can also come in handy!) You may also want to purchase a sketchpad for this project (we recommend a larger size\, 8.5″x11″ or 9″x12″)\, but you can easily paste or tape your template into your own sketchbook later. \nTicket includes two beverages! We’ll have alcoholic and non-alcoholic options available.  \nAbout the instructor: Allison De Jong is the Communications Coordinator and Editor of Montana Naturalist magazine at the Montana Natural History Center. She has no formal art training but has picked up a thing or two about nature journaling in her 15 years at MNHC\, and is proof that anyone can learn to keep a nature journal or phenology wheel! She began her first phenology wheel in January 2021\, and has been phenologizing daily ever since. SUMMARY:Canada's Ancient Amazon River and Its Rocky Mountain Headwaters
DESCRIPTION:Date: Wednesday\, December 11\nTime: 7:00-8:00 p.m.\nLocation: Montana Natural History Center\nCost: $7 for MNHC members\, $10 for non-members \nGET TICKETS! \nGeologic evidence shows that before the ice age\, a river the size of the Amazon once flowed from the Montana Rockies north to the Canadian Arctic. Continental glaciers overrode and destroyed the river in Canada\, and diverted its Montana headwaters to the Mississippi. The great river’s delta survived the ice age in the Labrador sea ice\, with tell-tale sediments eroded from its lost headwaters. At its greatest extent\, about 18 million years ago\, the river reached south to the Colorado Plateau and Great Basin\, but its headwaters were cut off piecemeal by tectonics\, volcanism\, and glaciation. This lecture\, given by geologist Jim Sears\, traces the Amazon’s twin from its origins to its destruction. \nAbout the Instructor: Dr. James W. Sears received his PhD from Queen’s University\, Canada\, in 1979\, and has taught at the University of Montana since 1982. He researches the structure and tectonics of the Rocky Mountain region. And you’ll have the opportunity to record your Field Note with Montana Public Radio sometime later this year\, if interested. Many of the Field Notes aired since 2021 were written in previous workshops! (You can read and listen to them here.) \nThis class will be a delightful combination of natural history and creativity. While obtaining their Bachelor of Science in Biology they worked throughout the backcountry of Montana\, Idaho and Alaska tracking animals and recording plant species until the fall of 2020 when isolation brought back an old love of creating art. Taking inspiration from their wilderness experiences\, they created Up Moss Creek Studio in 2021 as a habitat for experimentation where they combine their knowledge of scientific illustration\, botany\, mycology and multiple art mediums to create realistic figure paintings\, jewelry and art objects that highlight the hidden mossy worlds within western Montana’s diverse ecosystems. They are currently based in the Bitterroot Mountains of Montana where they share a home with their partner Brandon\, dog Dagwood\, and cat Orion. The dream is that they encourage you to not have to choose between beautiful and strong. Marrow Lee’s mission is to create pieces to inspire your spirit to wear through each phase of life. Last summer she started tumbling glass bottles in a solar-powered concrete mixer to create a smooth product quite like sea glass. She sells the glass for use in potted houseplants\, in terrariums and aquariums\, or in succulent gardens. She began combining the glass with dried plants from her garden to create botanical suncatchers and pendants. She’s expanded that work to include other natural items and waste from her home like coffee grounds and tea leaves. Kate will have a variety of glass and botanical products on hand and will share some techniques for integrating plant material into art projects.

SUMMARY:Fall 2024 Online Master Naturalist Course
DESCRIPTION:Are you a self-directed\, curious learner\, eager to explore your natural surroundings? Our immersive online certification course will help you develop naturalist skills and a deeper understanding of the natural world through a blend of live online classes\, recorded lectures\, guided independent study\, and an in-person field weekend. \nFall Online Certification Course 2024 \nTuesdays\, September 3rd – November 19\, 2024\n10:00 a.m.-noon MDT \nField Weekend\, September 21-22 \nEngage with the course anytime\, anywhere. The online format can fit your schedule. Though attending the field weekend and live online classes is highly encouraged\, they will be recorded and supplemental material can be provided. This class works best for independent learners who can complete activities outside of the traditional classroom format. From landscape processes to lichen we will look at specific details and how each part contributes to the greater ecology. \nKnowledgeable guest instructors include Missoula College instructor and botanist Greg Peters\, botanist and author Peter Lesica\, MNHC communications coordinator Allison De Jong\, BLM Fuels Geoff Farinholt\, artist and naturalist Jenah Mead\, and Philip L. And you’ll have the opportunity to record your Field Note with Montana Public Radio sometime later this year\, if interested. Many of the Field Notes aired since 2021 were written in previous workshops! (You can read and listen to them here.) \nThis class will be a delightful combination of natural history and creativity. SUMMARY:Felted Animal Portraits with Melissa Thompson
DESCRIPTION:Date: Saturday\, November 9\nTime: 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.\nLocation: Montana Natural History Center\n$30 for MNHC member\, $35 for non-members \nREGISTER HERE!\nJoin artist and previous MNHC Artist in Residence\, Melissa Thompson\, for a unique animal portrait art class at MNHC! Take inspiration from our vast collection of specimens to create an animal portrait using the wet felting process. You will cut and layer pre-felted pieces. Water\, soap\, and agitation felt the wool fibers together creating an amazing work of art! These textural pieces can combine the character of the animal along with evocative artistic elements of shape and color. Bring an animal of your choice to life through art. The animals can be full body silhouettes with shapes or faces or even imaginary animals. \nThis class is great for ages 8 and up! \nInstructor: Melissa Thompson is a Missoula based multi-media artist. She received her BFA in drawing from the University of Montana in 1996. She has been a tattoo artist for 24 years\, and in addition\, she is a faux taxidermy maker\, body painter and special effects makeup artist. She received her MA in Prosthetic Effects in 2022 from Falmouth University in Cornwall England. She occasionally teaches these various skills around Missoula\, and exhibits work throughout the country. Our immersive online certification course will help you develop naturalist skills and a deeper understanding of the natural world through a blend of live online classes\, recorded lectures\, guided independent study\, and an in-person field weekend. \nFall Online Certification Course 2024 \nTuesdays\, September 3rd – November 19\, 2024\n10:00 a.m.-noon MDT \nField Weekend\, September 21-22 \nEngage with the course anytime\, anywhere. The online format can fit your schedule. Though attending the field weekend and live online classes is highly encouraged\, they will be recorded and supplemental material can be provided. This class works best for independent learners who can complete activities outside of the traditional classroom format. Your instructors will be available throughout the course for one-on-one guidance and mentorship. \nREGISTER HERE \nTaught by MNHC Naturalist Christine Morris\, this class includes: \n\na live Zoom or recorded lecture once per week for 12 weeks. 6 classes are live\, 6 are recorded lectures.\nweekly assignments\nin-person weekend field experience in Missoula on September 21-22\ncourse workbook\nan online classroom platform to engage with instructors and fellow students throughout the course\n\n\nWe’ll cover a wide breadth of topics with the goal of giving you a foundation of naturalist skills and knowledge on which you can build. Learn how to identify common birds\, plants\, butterflies\, insects\, mammal tracks\, and more. From landscape processes to lichen we will look at specific details and how each part contributes to the greater ecology. \nKnowledgeable guest instructors include Missoula College instructor and botanist Greg Peters\, botanist and author Peter Lesica\, MNHC communications coordinator Allison De Jong\, BLM Fuels Geoff Farinholt\, artist and naturalist Jenah Mead\, and Philip L. DESCRIPTION:Location: Virtual Classroom on Zoom\nDates: Tuesdays\, November 5\, 12\, 19\, 26\, and December 3 and 10\nTime: 10:00-11:30 a.m. \nExplore various forms of nature writing\, then research and write your own Field Note during this online\, workshop-based six-part class! \nInstructors:\nAllison De Jong\, writer\, naturalist\, and editor of Montana Naturalist magazine and Field Notes on Montana Public Radio\nDrew Lefebvre\, naturalist\, writer\, and owner of Turnstone Nature Education \nIn this six-part class\, you’ll work with Field Notes editor Allison De Jong\, naturalist Drew Lefebvre\, and your fellow participants to research\, write\, and workshop your very own Field Note. We’ll read and discuss a variety of nature writing; brainstorm ideas; practice writing prompts; discuss tone\, style\, and research methods; and provide feedback for each other’s Field Notes. And you’ll have the opportunity to record your Field Note with Montana Public Radio sometime later this year\, if interested. Many of the Field Notes aired since 2021 were written in previous workshops! (You can read and listen to them here.) \nThis class will be a delightful combination of natural history and creativity. You’ll get to explore a natural history topic of your choice\, practice different writing techniques\, get and give feedback on your and others’ writing in a small\, supportive workshop setting\, and finish the class with a lovely natural history essay that’s ready to be shared with the Montana Public Radio listening area (if you wish!). \nCourse fee includes a copy of our beautiful Field Notes from the Montana Natural History Center book*\, a collection of 134 Field Notes as well as original artwork from dozens of naturalists from the program’s first 25 years.
