SUMMARY:Wild Wander: Springtime at Fort Missoula and Slevin's Island
DESCRIPTION:Date: Saturday\, April 27\nTime: 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.\nLocation: Fort Missoula Native Plant Garden and Slevin’s Island. Go here for directions to the Fort Missoula Native Plant Garden. \nREGISTER HERE \nJoin Sydney Morical and Cathryn Rann of Wild Wanders as we saunter through the Fort Missoula Native Plant Garden discussing qualities and applications of the various edible and medicinal plants within before skipping down to the secret garden that is Slevin’s Island along the Clark Fork River to greet many a fresh spring green! Feel free to bring your plant guides\, notebook\, and pen\, if you’d like. \nThis little-known park right here in town is such a gem and an incredibly lush location to wander along\, full of fancy forts and hidden bits. We are doing this one early so as to beat the skeeters. A note on accessibility: this wander is 2.5 hours long\, with the first hour taking place within the Native Plant Garden\, which is flat and very accessible for all abilities. As we move down toward the river\, please note that a fair amount of the trail is not recommended for individuals with serious mobility limitations\, as it involves some uneven terrain and other obstacles. We apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate your understanding as we try to keep many of our events accessible to all. \nInstructors: Sydney Morical and Cathryn Raan are both passionate and longtime gatherers of wild food and medicine. They have also served on the Board of Directors for the Western Montana Mycological Association since 2018\, planning events\, teaching a wide variety of mushroom classes\, and keeping the fungal community engaged and connected. They both have experience in herbal medicine and agriculture (they will teach you about all the wonderful “weeds” around town)\, and a deep love of this land and all the plants living in their midst. They are humbled and delighted to be two of many on a long strand of plant-loving humans sharing their experience and knowledge with others. \nCost: $30 MNHC members\, $35 non-members\nKids welcome free of charge. \nRegister here: \n\n \nFAQs: \nWhat’s the refund policy? \nThe course fee (minus a 25% administrative fee) is refundable if a cancellation is made up to 7 days before the event. No refunds will be issued for cancellations made after this deadline. See our full refund/cancellation policy here. \nDo I have to bring my printed ticket to the event? \nNope! We will have a list of all the attendees.

SUMMARY:Incredible Insects - Lunchtime Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Date: Thursday\, May 30\nTime: 12:00-1:00 p.m.\nLocation: Montana Natural History Center\nCost: $5 suggested donation \nNational Geographic recently featured an article about seasonal pools in the Northeast that “teem with tiny life.” Nan Vance’s presentation will be about even tinier life here in the Northwest that even the most ardent wildlife biologists and naturalists tend to overlook. Insects are seen primarily as pests or food for wildlife\, unless\, of course\, they are harnessed to serve our needs. Nan will give us a glimpse of what Shakespeare aptly put: “For nought so vile upon this earth doth live but to the earth some special good doth give.” \nLearn about amazing insects during your lunch hour! Feel free to bring your food and eat while you enjoy the presentation. \nInstructor: Nan C. Vance was a lead Research Plant Physiologist\, USDA Forest Service\, Pacific Northwest Research Station. For over 15 years she published studies covering plant physiology and ecology\, pollination ecology\, and plant restoration in the Inland Northwest. Post-retirement: in the last 12 years she has spent as much time in the field as possible investigating native plants of the region\, and associated insects. With the help of field photography\, she advocates for better understanding and support of natural habitats and processes including those that influence the insects.

SUMMARY:Summertime Wander with Herbal Honeys and Oxymels
DESCRIPTION:Date: Saturday\, June 8\nTime: 1:00 – 3:00 p.m.\nLocation: Montana Natural History Center \nREGISTER HERE \nJoin Sydney Morical and Cathryn Rann of Wild Wanders! \nFor this summertime wander\, we’ll be showcasing the range of flavors and medicinal properties present in a flight of foraged herbal honeys\, vinegars\, and oxymels. As we enjoy\, we’ll explore the characteristics and applications of these various infused delights. We’ll then get a chance to see some of them in real time on our wander around the river\, learn what they look like\, and more about their community. Ultimately we’ll circle back to home base for a demo of how to craft your own infused honeys\, vinegars\, and oxymels at home with commonly found plants. This is the best time of year for making these creations! \nWe won’t be going far on this wander (we never do) but we will be meeting many plant friends along the way so bring your plant guides\, notebook\, and pen if you’d like. We’ll start off by sharing a bit about who we are and why wild food and medicine is such an important part of our lives before letting the rest of the group introduce themselves. After some brief housekeeping we will start our wander which will be under one mile in total. We generally discuss 20-30 different plants and fungi on our wanders and only harvest as a group when populations are abundant enough to support it. \nInstructors: Sydney Morical and Cathryn Raan are both passionate and longtime gatherers of wild food and medicine. They have also served on the Board of Directors for the Western Montana Mycological Association since 2018\, planning events\, teaching a wide variety of mushroom classes and keeping the fungal community engaged and connected. SUMMARY:Poets in the 'Root
DESCRIPTION:This FREE event is sponsored by Bitterroot Audubon\, O’Hara Commons and Sustainability Center\, Blue Heron Nature Tours\, and the Montana Natural History Center. \nNature in nearly all manifestations has inspired poets since there were poets! And at least since the Roman poet Horace wrote Ars Poetica\, or the Art of Poetry\, in 19 BCE\, literature\, including poetry\, has sought to both instruct and delight. \nPoets in the ‘Root combines these two aims in an uncommon but simple way. One person reads a favorite poem or part of a poem that uses an element of nature to convey its message (we have a list if you want recommendations). Then\, the same or another person gives an explanation (5 minutes max) of some aspect of that nature element. The explanation focuses on nature interpretation\, not literary interpretation. Listeners get a bit of poetry and a bit of natural history. \nAnyone can volunteer to read a poem and/or offer nature interpretation. Most will read poems by others\, but if you’re a poet\, we’d love to hear your own work. This is a fun way for Master Naturalists to earn credit towards certification. \nWe’ll have refreshments\, including iced tea\, wine\, and snacks! Event will take place on the lawn of the lovely O’Hara Commons – please bring your own chair. \nWant to volunteer? Have questions? Contact Micki Long at mickilong@gmail.com. \nFree and open to the public! \nArt by Deb Goslin.

SUMMARY:Berry Wander on the River Trail
DESCRIPTION:Date: Thursday\, August 15\nTime: 1:00 – 3:00 p.m.\nLocation: Montana Natural History Center \nREGISTER HERE \nJoin Sydney Morical and Cathryn Rann of Wild Wanders as we travel along the Clark Fork River Trail at the peak of Montana berry season. We’ll be delving into various edible and medicinal plants\, their properties\, and how we enjoy them. We won’t be going far on this wander (we never do) but we will be meeting many plant friends along the way so bring your plant guides\, notebook\, and pen if you’d like. There may be opportunities to harvest\, so bring a little bag just in case. \nWe’ll start off by sharing a bit about who we are and why wild food and medicine is such an important part of our lives before letting the rest of the group introduce themselves. \nCost: $30 MNHC members\, $35 non-members\nKids welcome free of charge \n\n \nFAQs: \nWhat’s the refund policy? \nThe course fee (minus a 25% administrative fee) is refundable if a cancellation is made up to 7 days before the event. No refunds will be issued for cancellations made after this deadline. See our full refund/cancellation policy here. \nDo I have to bring my printed ticket to the event? \nNope! SUMMARY:Rattlesnake Dam Removal Tour: Bring On the Trout!
DESCRIPTION:Date: Thursday\, September 5\nTime: 12:30-2:00 p.m.\nLocation: Meet at the parking area at the north end of Duncan Drive – click here for map. Look for Duncan drive in the lower left corner. Follow it to the green parking emblam on the map. Travel north on Duncan Drive\, which is on the west side of Rattlesnake creek. Go past the Waterworks trailhead turnoff and past the North Hills trailhead parking. Park at the end of Duncan Drive at the power station. \nRegister now \nIn 2020 the Rattlesnake Creek dam was removed and the floodplain restored\, creating a functional and natural connection between the headwaters of Rattlesnake Creek and the Clark Fork River for the first time in 115 years. That project resulted in more than 10 stream miles reconnected for native fish; five acres of wetland and floodplain restoration and preservation\, .5 miles of stream reconstruction\, and 16\,000 planted trees and shrubs. \nTake a tour with Rob Roberts\, Trout Unlimited’s senior project manager\, to learn about the history of Missoula’s water supply\, the results of the lower dam removal\, and future work to improve the fishery and recreation through the removal and management of 10 dams in the Rattlesnake Wilderness Area. This is your chance to find out how those cool alpine waters benefit our westslope cutthroat trout\, bull trout\, and so much more! \nInstructor: Like many Trout Unlimited staff\, Rob followed a nontraditional path in his career development\, graduating from college with a degree in psychology and then honing his community development skills in the Peace Corps in Madagascar. Rob initially spearheaded TU’s national youth education program before moving west in 2004 to start TU’s growing western mine reclamation and watershed restoration program. Rob has worked as a project manager for TU out of the Missoula office for almost 20 years\, with one hiatus to sail across the Pacific Ocean. Rob is typically responsible for overall project management and stakeholder coordination and takes the lead role in grant development\, contracting for planning and investigation\, permitting and stream restoration design. When not at work\, you’ll find him paragliding\, hunting for wild mushrooms\, and scuba diving in Montana’s lakes and rivers. \nActivity Level: .8 mile walking each way. Moderate. \nWhat to Bring: \n\nClothes appropriate for changing Montana weather conditions – layers are good!\nWater & snacks\nWalking shoes or boots\nSunhat\, sunscreen\, sunglasses\nAnything you need to be comfortable walking and standing outside for 1.5 hours\n\n

SUMMARY:Naturalist Field Day: Explore Primm Meadow
DESCRIPTION:Date: Wednesday\, October 2\nTime: 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.\nLocation: Meet at the Montana Natural History Center. We’ll travel to Primm Meadow in the MNHC bus. \nFeel the majesty of an old-growth\, open stand of ponderosa pines as you explore the history and magnificent ecology of Primm Meadow. This park-like grove has been carefully utilized and managed by humans for thousands of years. Native Americans and homesteaders practiced understory burns to increase productivity of shrubs and crops. The ponderosas thrived in response\, developing a resiliency to larger wildfires. Surrounded by forest that has been logged and replanted or burned\, Primm Meadow is a window back in time. \nSteven Kloetzel\, Western Land Steward for The Nature Conservancy\, will be our guide as we explore this special place. He will discuss restoration work\, fire ecology\, history\, and more. \nDifficulty: Easy/moderate. We will be driving through the gate right to the grove and walking in a loop. We will be walking/standing for up to 2.5 hours. We will have a picnic lunch\, seated on the ground. No bathrooms. \nWhat to Bring: \n\nClothes appropriate for changing Montana weather conditions – layers\, rain\, sun\nBoots or shoes for walking\nWater\nLunch/snacks\nAnything you need to be comfortable outside for hours and on uneven terrain\nBinoculars (optional\, we have some to borrow)\n\nSome scholarships are available. SUMMARY:Protecting Pollinators and Native Plants - Lunch & Learn Climate Solutions Week Program
DESCRIPTION:Date: Thursday\, October 3\, 2024\nTime: 12:00-1:00 p.m.\nLocation: Montana Natural History Center\nCost: FREE \nJoin the Montana Natural History Center and Climate Smart Missoula for a Lunch & Learn program\, Protecting Pollinators and Native Plants\, during Climate Solutions Week 2024! \nOur communities thrive with the biodiversity of native plants. Insects\, birds\, and mammals have evolved to rely on our native plant communities. We can support the vibrancy of local habitats and survival of fellow species by planting and caring for native plants. During this program you will learn how to make your own seed balls to distribute native seeds! \nFall is the perfect time for native seed planting. Many require the cold snap of winter to germinate in the spring. Seed balls are easy to transport and can be tossed in a garden patch or abandoned weedy area. We will provide directions on creating them and will have materials available for the first 20 people to make one to take home. \nBring your lunch! \nAfter we make the seed balls we will screen a film about plants and pollinators. Sit back\, eat lunch\, and enjoy the movie! \nPhoto by Kelly Dix

SUMMARY:Voyage to the Varves: Glacial Lake Missoula Field Day
DESCRIPTION:Date: Wednesday\, September 24\, 2025\nTime: 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.\nLocation: Meet at MNHC\, travel by MNHC bus\nCost: $40 MNHC and/or GLM Chapter members/$60 non-members \nREGISTER HERE \nSee Glacial Lake Missoula’s seasonal calendar recorded in sediment with geologist Jim Shelden! \nVarves are annual sediment depositions\, often recording seasons in differently colored bands. Darker bands are deposited in winter as organic matter settles\, and lighter bands are deposited in the summer as glacial flour and run-off sediments drift to the lake bed. Varves also give a minimum depth of water greater than 300 feet. Glacial lake varves are often beautifully preserved. \nThe Ninemile varves are crucial to understanding the story of Glacial Lake Missoula. Not only do they record the minimum number of years Glacial Lake Missoula existed\, they also record the number of times the glacial lake emptied in catastrophic floods\, forever changing the landscape. See these varves up close and hold pieces of them in your hands! \nJim Shelden will recount the story of Glacial Lake Missoula and the importance of the varves using materials and displays at the Montana Natural History Center. Then we will travel by MNHC bus to the Ninemile varves roadcut. You will be able to inspect the varves and take samples home. This program is a wonderful way to learn more about one of the major and defining geological events in Western Montana. \nActivity level: easy. \nWhat to Bring: \n\nWater/snacks\nClothes for changing Montana weather conditions\nSneakers or boots\nSack lunch for the bus if desired\nAnything you need to be comforatable standing\, sitting on the bus\, or walking\n\n  \nFAQs\nWhat’s the refund policy? \nThe course fee (minus a 25% administrative fee) is refundable if a cancellation is made up to 7 days before the event. No refunds will be issued for cancellations made after this deadline. See our full refund/cancellation policy here. \nDo I have to bring my printed ticket to the event? \nNope! SUMMARY:Ravens\, Crows\, and Magpies\, OH MY! with John and Colleen Marzluff
DESCRIPTION:Date: Saturday\, October 11\, 2025\nTime: 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.\nLocation: Meet at MNHC\, travel by MNHC bus\nCost: $150 MNHC members/$160 non-members \nREGISTER HERE\nJoin acclaimed researchers John and Colleen Marzluff on a scientific exploration of the corvid’s world. \nCheck out a clip from the PBS Nature documentary: A Murder of Crows: As the Crow Flies\, on their groundbreaking research. \nCorvids are a family of songbirds including crows\, ravens\, magpies\, nutcrackers\, and jays. The Marzluffs have spent four decades studying corvids throughout the Northern Hemisphere and continue to do so in Yellowstone\, where they are unraveling the connections between ravens\, wolves\, and people. Their work highlights the long-standing influence these birds have on people\, the mental acuity they use to solve problems\, the complexity of their behavior\, and the challenges they pose to conservation efforts. Missoula is home to ravens that will thrill us with their acrobatic flight\, crows that will sidle up to us for a close look\, magpies that are as colorful as they are noisy\, nutcrackers that are busy stashing seeds for winter\, and jays that give away their moods by raising and lowering their blue crests. \nWe will combine in-class lectures with field observations to nearby locations to learn about the remarkable behaviors\, habits\, and influences of these common\, but often underappreciated\, birds. \nInstructors: \nJohn Marzluff is Professor Emeritus of Wildlife Science at the University of Washington. His research has been the focus of articles in the New York Times\, National Geographic\, Audubon\, Boys Life\, The Seattle Times\, National Wildlife\, Consumer Reports\, Time\, and Science. PBS’s NATURE featured his raven research in its production\, “Ravens\,” and his crow research in the film documentary\, “A Murder of Crows.” His current research focuses on the interactions of ravens and wolves in Yellowstone. He teaches field ecology courses at the University of Washington and for Yellowstone Forever. \nDr. Marzluff has written six books and edited several others. His graduate research in communication\, social organization\, demography\, and foraging behavior was reveled in The Pinyon Jay\, 1992\, Academic Press (coauthored with his advisor Russell Balda). His book\, In the Company of Crows and Ravens (with Tony Angell\, 2005 Yale U. Press) blends biology\, conservation\, and anthropology to suggest that human and crow cultures have co-evolved. This book won the 2006 Washington State Book Award for general nonfiction. With his wife\, Colleen\, he published Dog Days\, Raven Nights (2011 Yale University Press)\, which combines reflection with biology and the recreational pursuit of dog sledding to show how a life in science blooms. Gifts of the Crow (2012 Free Press\, coauthored with Tony Angell) applies a neurobiological perspective to understand the amazing feats of corvids. His Welcome to Subirdia (2014 Yale) discovers that moderately settled lands host a splendid array of biological diversity and suggests ways in which people can steward these riches to benefit birds and themselves. His most recent In Search of Meadowlarks (2020 Yale) connects our agriculture and diets to the conservation of birds and other wildlife. \nDr. Marzluff has mentored over 40 graduate students and authored over 170 scientific papers on various aspects of bird behavior and wildlife management. He is a Fellow of the American Ornithologist’s Union\, a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science\, and a National Geographic Explorer. \nColleen Marzluff completed her bachelor’s degree at Whitman College in Walla Walla\, Washington\, in 1982. She returned to her native southwest to study biology at Northern Arizona University\, where she completed a Master’s thesis on the feeding ecology of Abert’s squirrels. After completing her degree\, she worked with Dr. Russell Balda as a technician in his Avian Cognition Lab until leaving for Maine.  After moving to Idaho\, she was hired by a private consulting company as an administrative assistant.  She continued part-time as an administrative assistant when the company split off to a nonprofit group. Because running sled dogs wasn’t a well-known sport in Boise\, Idaho\, she developed a curriculum for and taught a class every fall. Later\, in Washington\, she became a full-time mother to daughters and dogs. Today she is involved in several local organizations and her daughters’ schools. To keep her animal behavior skills sharp\, she is participating in pet therapy\, agility\, and recently\, herding. \nWhat to Bring:  \n\nclothes for changing Montana weather conditions – layers\, good shoes\, rain or sun gear\nwater/snacks\nlunch\nbinoculars (we have some to borrow)\nnotebooks and writing implement (optional)\nanything you need to be comfortable in the classroom\, on the bus\, or in the field\n\nFAQs\nWhat’s the refund policy? \nThe course fee (minus a 25% administrative fee) is refundable if a cancellation is made up to 7 days before the event. No refunds will be issued for cancellations made after this deadline. See our full refund/cancellation policy here. \nDo I have to bring my printed ticket to the event? \nNope!
