SUMMARY:Summer 2025 Master Naturalist Certification Course
DESCRIPTION:Summer (June) 2025 Master Naturalist Certification Course\nMONDAY\, June 2\, to FRIDAY\, June 6\, 2025. \nOur certification courses consist of at least 40 hours of instruction in a mix of lectures\, in-class labs\, and outdoor field trips. We’ll cover a wide breadth of topics with the goal of giving you an essential foundation of skill and knowledge on which you can build. Our summer session will focus on flower plants\, birds\, and insects. \nREGISTER HERE!\nThis is a five-day intensive course held in the summer each year. Class meets from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. each day. \nThis class is compressed into a short window of time so we will delve deeply into three subjects. Our focus will be on learning the core skills of identification of: 1) flowers\, shrubs and trees\, 2) birds\, and 3) insects. Instruction will also include time on local geology\, mammals\, fire ecology\, and riparian ecology. \nInstructors: \nChristine Morris\, Community Programs Coordinator and naturalist. Christine teaches the spring and fall Montana Master Naturalist courses\, the Certified Interpretive Guide course\, and coordinates adult programs and lectures. \nGuest instructors may include Elena Ulev\, naturalist\, and Geoff Farinholt\, BLM. \nWe’ll take full advantage of the summer season and spend most of our time afield. We will spend time in the cottonwood galleries of the river’s floodplain and venture to the conifer forest in Pattee Canyon. Get a handle on plant identification by recognizing patterns in form\, catch and identify butterflies along the Clark Fork River\, and recognize birds by song and sight. \n“The course has helped me to be more curious\, observant\, and connected with my surroundings. I’ve met people who share this passion\, their experiences\, and curiosity with whom I can wander and wonder.”– 2023 Program participant \nMaster Naturalist Certification Requirements: \n\nThe main project for this class is keeping a detailed naturalist handbook with species list. To get the most out of your experience\, you should expect to spend a little time in the afternoon reviewing and organizing your daily notes\, and tracking your observations.\nFull attendance.\nComplete the culminating exercise.\n\nPlease Note:\nThis is a university-level class. A significant amount of information is covered in 5 days. DESCRIPTION:Summer 2027 Master Naturalist Certification II Course \nMonday-Friday\, 9:00 a.m.- 3:00 p.m. \nREGISTER HERE registration coming January 1. 2027 \nThis course is for anyone who has certified as a Master Naturalist in Montana or elsewhere or has the professional/academic background to begin with a level II course. This level II certification course consists of at  of instruction in a mix of lectures\, in-class labs\, and outdoor field trips. We will build on the foundations established in our Master Naturalist level I course by advancing skills in topics such as birding by ear\, nature journalling\, plant family ID\, grasses\, ecology\, and invertebrate ID. \nIf you are taking this for your initial certification you will have pre-course and homework throughout the week to reach the requred 40 hours of content. \nThe course will be taught by an amazing selection of instructors\, all experts in their field. \nMore information coming soon. \nThe class will be be based at the Montana Natural History Center. I’ve met people who share this passion\, their experiences\, and curiosity with whom I can wander and wonder.”– 2023 Program participant \nRegister now for the Spring 2024 Montana Master Naturalist Course! \nTaught by MNHC Naturalist Christine Morris\, this class: \n\nis a 12-week course\nruns on Tuesdays from 10:00a.m -1:00 pm (no class March 18\, the week of UM’s spring break)\nincludes 2 full-day Saturday field trips\, 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.\, tentatively scheduled on February 22 and April 12\, and 1 half-day Saturday field trip\, 9:00 a.m.- 1:00 p.m. on March 29.\n\nThis course will enable you to interpret the landscape on your own; to pry out its secrets and share those secrets with others; to take in the natural world first hand rather than through a guide.  This confidence begins with knowing the details: the names of the local flowers\, birds\, trees\, and butterflies.  Throughout the course you will practice specific naturalist skills and gain foundational knowledge that will assist in your engagement with the natural world for years to come. \nSee our local forests in new light as you learn about the role our conifers play in a coordinated ecology with fire and snow pack moisture. Or marvel in the diversity of lichen. Spend an entire day identifying winter raptors in the Mission valley. Become attuned to bird songs and butterfly wings. Get a handle on flower identification by recognizing patterns in form. Our emphasis will be on learning how to identify local flora\, fauna\, and landscape processes while gaining insight on how each part is connected. \nKnowledgeable guest instructors include botanist and author Peter Lesica\, botanist Greg Peters\, birder Chadwick Moore\, MNHC editor Allison De Jong\, and conservation biologist Erim Gomez. \nThe class will be be based at the Montana Natural History Center. Wright Zoological Museum Curator Angela Hornsby. \nView the course syllabus (some elements may be subject to change).  \nUpon course completion\, students: \n\nWill receive a Master Naturalist certificate and pin\nBe a part of an engaged and curious Master Naturalist community\nHave the knowledge and skills to perform environmental stewardship\n\nTo complete this certification course\, students are expected to attend classes/view recorded lectures\, complete weekly self-guided study assignments\, keep a nature journal\, and complete a final class project. \nPlan on putting in about 5-6 hours per week including class time\, independent study assignments\, nature journaling\, and final assignment. \nMaster Naturalist Certification is maintained by completing 20 hours of volunteer service and 8 hours of continuing education each year. You will receive a new pin each year you certify! \nRecommended Materials: \n\nbinoculars\nhand lens or loupe\nblank journal (required)\nmicron or small sharpie pen\ncolored pencils or watercolor pencils\nbird guide such as Sibley’s Field Guide to Birds of Western North America\nBotany in a Day by Thomas J. Elpel\nplant/flower guide such as Plants of the Rocky Mountains or Wildflowers of Montana (depending on what you can find in print)\n\nRegistration Information: \n\nCost: $355/$325 members\nFull payment due upon registration. The course fee (minus a $100 administrative fee) is refundable ONLY if a cancellation is made 30 days before the first day of class.
