While obtaining their Bachelor of Science in Biology they worked throughout the backcountry of Montana\, Idaho and Alaska tracking animals and recording plant species until the fall of 2020 when isolation brought back an old love of creating art. Taking inspiration from their wilderness experiences\, they created Up Moss Creek Studio in 2021 as a habitat for experimentation where they combine their knowledge of scientific illustration\, botany\, mycology and multiple art mediums to create realistic figure paintings\, jewelry and art objects that highlight the hidden mossy worlds within western Montana’s diverse ecosystems. They are currently based in the Bitterroot Mountains of Montana where they share a home with their partner Brandon\, dog Dagwood\, and cat Orion. How is the light interacting with fall colors? What atmospheric conditions complement the feeling of spring wildflower blooms? What frozen/snow texture balances well with the semi-frozen creek? These are the types of questions that he love to explore! Each photographic outing affords an opportunity to practice\, implement and evolve this practice. Every day is a new opportunity to better understand and photograph the landscape. She also regularly sneaks out of her house and across the Scott Street Bridge to either turn pots at the Clay Studio Missoula or drink coffee and do computer work at Hunter Bay Coffee (too many distractions at home!). Adelheid has a B.A. in Political Science and Studio Art (with minors in German and Horticulture) and a M.S. in Plant and Soil Science. She works as a Grants Administrator for Missoula County. She’ll be sharing her pottery and paper-cutting with shoppers at the bazaar. Pieces that feel like a reunion of sorts. Using found items from artist Cass Stoltzfus’ travels near and far\, each piece speaks with a voice of its own. The dream is that they encourage you to not have to choose between beautiful and strong. Marrow Lee’s mission is to create pieces to inspire your spirit to wear through each phase of life. These designs are shaped by the rivers that flow through Montana\, the slopes of humbling mountains\, and the days that have brought untouchable happiness. INSTAGRAM: @marrowleedesigns \nTextiles by Angie Evenden \nAngie Evenden /\nPinyondraw Design\nAngie’s artistic creations reflect her lifelong love of flowers\, nature\, textiles and color. Wildflowers captured her heart at an early age and drew Angie to botanical studies and to art. This interest led to a decades long career as a botanist and scientist with the National Park Service and Forest Service working in wildland landscapes across the western US. Now Angie can be found in the studio or outside enjoying a favorite wild place. \nPainting by Jason Poole \nJason C. Poole /\nPaleo Artist: Painting\, Sketches\, & More \nJason C. Poole has worn many hats\, Adjunct Professor of Paleontology\, Scientific Illustrator\, art teacher\, and Paleontology field instructor. Jason has excavated dinosaurs on three continents\, including Africa\, South and North America. Paralititan\, Dreadnoughtus and Suuwassea are three dinosaurs worked on by Poole\, all were new to science when discovered and two of which are supermassive titanosaurs. Poole is also a Paleontological Artist who has published in National Geographic and whose art work appears in many museum and private collections. INSTAGRAM: @jasoncpoolepaleoartist \nPrint by Kate Wasem \nKate Wasem\nRaised in Pennsylvania Dutch country\, art-schooled in Savannah\, Kate found her way to Missoula in 2007 and has (mostly) been here ever since. A self-described baker and picture-maker\, she’s spent the past 15 years working in neighborhood bakeries in western Montana and beyond\, and it continues to inform her work. Her pictures are steeped in whimsy\, humor\, and a love for story – sometimes with a dash of sweetness\, other times with a pinch of saltiness. A late-blooming naturalist\, she enjoys weaving a colorful mix of flora and fauna into her drawings\, paintings\, and prints. Each of Michelle’s pieces are handmade\, and due to their nature — of being from nature — one of a kind. There is so much beauty in life and for Breze it all comes down to the simple things. It’s the world of details in a single piece of pine bark. Or\, the catchy melody comprised by just a few tones. She is not an artist who sticks to the same subject matter for an extended period of time; life is too short for that. Although she does have a main muse–NATURE! Breze prides herself on being a unique artist of many styles in multiple mediums. Her work ranges from animal works to abstract oil paintings and funky graphic drawings. She draws realistic charcoal drawings\, wood-burnings and vibrant landscapes and has created a line of sculpted jewelry. Breze is based in Missoula\, MT and hoping to grow more arms so she can keep creating more and more! INSTAGRAM: @brezeart \nGlasswork by Kate Stone \nKate Stone\nKate Stone balances her career in science and ornithology with artistic pursuits that blend concepts of nature and sustainability. Last summer she started tumbling glass bottles in a solar-powered concrete mixer to create a smooth product quite like sea glass. She sells the glass for use in potted houseplants\, in terrariums and aquariums\, or in succulent gardens. She began combining the glass with dried plants from her garden to create botanical suncatchers and pendants. She’s expanded that work to include other natural items and waste from her home like coffee grounds and tea leaves. Kate will have a variety of glass and botanical products on hand and will share some techniques for integrating plant material into art projects.

SUMMARY:Canada's Ancient Amazon River and Its Rocky Mountain Headwaters
DESCRIPTION:Date: Wednesday\, December 11\nTime: 7:00-8:00 p.m.\nLocation: Montana Natural History Center\nCost: $7 for MNHC members\, $10 for non-members \nGET TICKETS! \nGeologic evidence shows that before the ice age\, a river the size of the Amazon once flowed from the Montana Rockies north to the Canadian Arctic. Continental glaciers overrode and destroyed the river in Canada\, and diverted its Montana headwaters to the Mississippi. The great river’s delta survived the ice age in the Labrador sea ice\, with tell-tale sediments eroded from its lost headwaters. At its greatest extent\, about 18 million years ago\, the river reached south to the Colorado Plateau and Great Basin\, but its headwaters were cut off piecemeal by tectonics\, volcanism\, and glaciation. This lecture\, given by geologist Jim Sears\, traces the Amazon’s twin from its origins to its destruction. \nAbout the Instructor: Dr. James W. Sears received his PhD from Queen’s University\, Canada\, in 1979\, and has taught at the University of Montana since 1982. He researches the structure and tectonics of the Rocky Mountain region. SUMMARY:Sip & Sketch: Create a Phenology Wheel
DESCRIPTION:Date: Wednesday\, December 18th\nTime: 7:00 – 9:00 p.m.\nLocation: Montana Natural History Center\nCost: $30 for MNHC members\, $35 for non-members \nAre you looking for a reflective\, inspiring\, fun new project for 2025? Start a daily phenology wheel! Phenology is the study of change in the natural world – when flowers bloom and go to seed\, when birds migrate\, when trees leaf out\, when butterflies emerge\, when the snow falls\, and so much more. Taking a few minutes each day to observe and record these changes can add up to something truly beautiful over time\, and we’d love to help you get started. And there’s no better time than just before the beginning of a new year! \nDuring this program you’ll create the template for your daily phenology wheel for January 2025\, and ponder the possibilities for how you’ll fill it in come the new year. You can experiment with colored pencils and other media\, practice different forms of lettering\, and look at various examples of other naturalists’ phenology wheels for inspiration. \nWe’ll provide drawing paper\, colored pencils\, watercolor pencils\, drawing pencils\, micron pens\, templates\, and rulers for you to use during the program\, but please feel free to take along your own favorite art materials. (A compass and protractor\, if you have them\, can also come in handy!) You may also want to purchase a sketchpad for this project (we recommend a larger size\, 8.5″x11″ or 9″x12″)\, but you can easily paste or tape your template into your own sketchbook later. \nTicket includes two beverages! We’ll have alcoholic and non-alcoholic options available.  \nAbout the instructor: Allison De Jong is the Communications Coordinator and Editor of Montana Naturalist magazine at the Montana Natural History Center. She has no formal art training but has picked up a thing or two about nature journaling in her 15 years at MNHC\, and is proof that anyone can learn to keep a nature journal or phenology wheel! She began her first phenology wheel in January 2021\, and has been phenologizing daily ever since. No prior experience is necessary. Please just bring your open mind – a willingness to experiment and think in new ways. \nThis refreshing four-hour evening workshop is an invitation to explore both our interior and exterior ecosystems\, paying attention to the quiet or invisible things all around us. We will imagine the different ways in which humans and animals receive and send messages\, and how those messages traverse time and geography. We’ll consider how messages are stored in individual and collective memories\, in landscapes\, and in water. \nWe will discuss the benefit of taking notes – field notes and observations\, as well as notes from our interiors – considering two distinct spheres of noticing. We will explore strategies for “unsticking” our creative selves\, even on the darkest of winter days. Calling on poetry\, science\, images\, and our own imaginations\, we will spiral between internal and external systems\, exploring new forms and sensations in our physical bodies\, our thinking minds\, and our creative work. \nYou can expect to come away with material to spark future writing projects. You will receive a reading and resource list one week before the workshop\, meant to orient you and offer context for our time together. You will leave the workshop connected to an emerging community of local writers and creators. \nInstructor Chandra Brown is an educator\, river guide\, and writer originally from Alaska. She has worked within the realm of river conservation since her 2010 Fulbright grant to Ecuador\, and she founded Freeflow Institute in 2017. Her stories can be found in places like Adventure Journal\, The Dirtbag Diaries\, Kayak Session\, NRS\, and Patagonia. Chandra earned her M.S. in Environmental Studies from the University of Montana and has called Missoula home since 2014. \nLight refreshments provided. Time to contemplate ice ages and glacial lakes.Time for the Glacial Lake Missoula Chapter of the Ice Age Floods Institute’s Cabin Fever Lecture!  Warm up your curiosity about those iconic strandlines we can see from town with a lecture from renowned geologist James W. Sears. \nNew “LiDAR ” mapping techniques may imply that the famous Lake Missoula strandlines on Mount Sentinel and Mount Jumbo record only one draining of the ice-age lake. The draining coincided with massive erosion at the bottom of the lake\, but passive lowering of lake level at the top\, marked by short-term strandlines cut a few inches into thin colluvial soil on the mountainsides. \nAbout the Instructor: Dr. James W. Sears received his PhD from Queen’s University\, Canada\, in 1979\, and has taught at the University of Montana since 1982. He researches the structure and tectonics of the Rocky Mountain region. Jim has authored dozens of publications and geologic maps.

Come meet the artist\, and enjoy an inspiring night at MNHC! \nLight snacks and beverages provided. \nFrom “Lives and Lessons of Zoo Animals” series by Nicole Emlen \nAbout Nicole Emlen:\nI am a graduating senior at the University of Montana studying Biology. Biology has always been part of my story. I see beauty and diversity in every life form—from grizzly bears to wood frogs\, crane flies\, and glacier lilies. I have been privileged to grow up surrounded by science\, and I’m in the process of cultivating my own relationship with it. For me\, science and biology are intertwined with art and self-expression. \nPhotography helps me capture some of the beauty that exists in the world and share what I see with others. Beauty is all around us\, whether we notice it or not\, and photographs give us a chance to study nature with a perspective we couldn’t get in real time. I hope to curate curiosity with my photographs and inspire people to ask questions\, rather than dismissing something because it’s gross or scary or cute. \nI aspire to work with animals\, either at a zoo\, sanctuary\, or educational non-profit. It is unfortunate that so many animals are in captivity\, and while many are there for good reasons\, it means they won’t live like they could in the wild. My goal is to make the life of every individual I work with better in some way and share their stories with the world. There is so much we can learn from other forms of life\, and I strive to listen when they\nspeak.

Amanda will be in residence at MNHC starting in early April until early May. \nAmanda Baker (b.1994) is a Brooklyn-based interdisciplinary artist and educator. She received an MFA in printmaking from Pratt Institute in 2024\, and a BFA from Massachusetts College of Art and Design in 2016. Her work investigates 19th-century naturalist illustration through a contemporary print-based lens. Amanda has been a former artist in residence at COPE NYC\, has curated and shown work in numerous group exhibitions\, and was a 2023 Pratt Graduate Student Engagement Fund recipient. She also participates in various NYC-based bird and wildlife conservation advocacy groups and teaches community printmaking workshops. \nARTIST PRESENTATION\nJoin Amanda at MNHC for a presentation on Tuesday\, April 29th from 4:00-6:00 p.m. This presentation is followed by refreshments and is a chance to mingle and meet the artist. First Friday guests are invited to participate and practice new learned skills and enjoy an exhibit featuring Jason’s artwork. Jason is also signing copies of his education and coloring book\, Dinosaurs Behaving Badly. \nCurious artists\, illustrators\, and wildlife enthusiasts of all ages are welcome! \nDrinks and light refreshments provided. \nAbout Jason C. Poole: Jason has worn many hats\, Adjunct Professor of Paleontology\, Scientific Illustrator\, art teacher\, and Paleontology field instructor. Jason has excavated dinosaurs on three continents\, including Africa\, South and North America. Paralititan\, Dreadnoughtus and Suuwassea are three dinosaurs worked on by Poole\, all were new to science when discovered and two of which are supermassive titanosaurs. Poole is also a Paleontological Artist who has published in National Geographic and whose art work appears in many museum and private collections. \nJason resides in Missoula Montana and can often be found sketching in the studio and the great outdoors.
