By shopping here\, you not only bring home one-of-a-kind gifts but also support our talented local artists and our Montana community. \nSo\, join us at MNHC’s Holiday Bazaar\, and enjoy a little magic of this special time of year by giving back\, supporting local artists\, and nurturing a love for learning and nature. \nWe look forward to celebrating the season with you! \nMEET the ARTISTS \nArtwork by Erin McNeill \nErynn McNeill / Up Moss Creek\nErynn McNeill is an artist\, botanist\, and scientific illustrator. While obtaining their Bachelor of Science in Biology they worked throughout the backcountry of Montana\, Idaho and Alaska tracking animals and recording plant species until the fall of 2020 when isolation brought back an old love of creating art. Taking inspiration from their wilderness experiences\, they created Up Moss Creek Studio in 2021 as a habitat for experimentation where they combine their knowledge of scientific illustration\, botany\, mycology and multiple art mediums to create realistic figure paintings\, jewelry and art objects that highlight the hidden mossy worlds within western Montana’s diverse ecosystems. They are currently based in the Bitterroot Mountains of Montana where they share a home with their partner Brandon\, dog Dagwood\, and cat Orion. How is the light interacting with fall colors? What atmospheric conditions complement the feeling of spring wildflower blooms? What frozen/snow texture balances well with the semi-frozen creek? These are the types of questions that he love to explore! Each photographic outing affords an opportunity to practice\, implement and evolve this practice. Every day is a new opportunity to better understand and photograph the landscape. INSTAGRAM: @bchristiansonphoto \nCeramics by Adelheid West \nAdelheid West / Sticks and Stones Workshop\nAdelheid West raises food and a family in Missoula’s Northside Neighborhood. She enjoys keeping her hands busy – weeding the garden\, never ending house projects\, knitting socks\, directing kid art projects of all kinds\, and cutting and gluing tiny pieces of paper. She also regularly sneaks out of her house and across the Scott Street Bridge to either turn pots at the Clay Studio Missoula or drink coffee and do computer work at Hunter Bay Coffee (too many distractions at home!). Adelheid has a B.A. in Political Science and Studio Art (with minors in German and Horticulture) and a M.S. in Plant and Soil Science. She works as a Grants Administrator for Missoula County. She’ll be sharing her pottery and paper-cutting with shoppers at the bazaar. Pieces that feel like a reunion of sorts. Using found items from artist Cass Stoltzfus’ travels near and far\, each piece speaks with a voice of its own. The dream is that they encourage you to not have to choose between beautiful and strong. Marrow Lee’s mission is to create pieces to inspire your spirit to wear through each phase of life. These designs are shaped by the rivers that flow through Montana\, the slopes of humbling mountains\, and the days that have brought untouchable happiness. INSTAGRAM: @marrowleedesigns \nTextiles by Angie Evenden \nAngie Evenden /\nPinyondraw Design\nAngie’s artistic creations reflect her lifelong love of flowers\, nature\, textiles and color. Wildflowers captured her heart at an early age and drew Angie to botanical studies and to art. This interest led to a decades long career as a botanist and scientist with the National Park Service and Forest Service working in wildland landscapes across the western US. Now Angie can be found in the studio or outside enjoying a favorite wild place. \nPainting by Jason Poole \nJason C. Poole /\nPaleo Artist: Painting\, Sketches\, & More \nJason C. Poole has worn many hats\, Adjunct Professor of Paleontology\, Scientific Illustrator\, art teacher\, and Paleontology field instructor. Jason has excavated dinosaurs on three continents\, including Africa\, South and North America. Paralititan\, Dreadnoughtus and Suuwassea are three dinosaurs worked on by Poole\, all were new to science when discovered and two of which are supermassive titanosaurs. Poole is also a Paleontological Artist who has published in National Geographic and whose art work appears in many museum and private collections. INSTAGRAM: @jasoncpoolepaleoartist \nPrint by Kate Wasem \nKate Wasem\nRaised in Pennsylvania Dutch country\, art-schooled in Savannah\, Kate found her way to Missoula in 2007 and has (mostly) been here ever since. A self-described baker and picture-maker\, she’s spent the past 15 years working in neighborhood bakeries in western Montana and beyond\, and it continues to inform her work. Her pictures are steeped in whimsy\, humor\, and a love for story – sometimes with a dash of sweetness\, other times with a pinch of saltiness. A late-blooming naturalist\, she enjoys weaving a colorful mix of flora and fauna into her drawings\, paintings\, and prints. INSTAGRAM: @kate.wasem  \nJewelry by Michelle Nowels \nMichelle Nowels / Ashes and Arbor\nMichelle draws inspiration by looking for the beauty in nature and preserve it in creative ways\, like her beautiful hand pressed paintings from cross sections of trees found through the Northwest. Each of Michelle’s pieces are handmade\, and due to their nature — of being from nature — one of a kind. INSTAGRAM: @michelle_nowels \n  \nWoodburns by Brezeart \nBreze Schmitz / Brezeart\nBreze\, like the wind\, is an artist inspired by life! There is so much beauty in life and for Breze it all comes down to the simple things. It’s the world of details in a single piece of pine bark. Or\, the catchy melody comprised by just a few tones. She is not an artist who sticks to the same subject matter for an extended period of time; life is too short for that. Although she does have a main muse–NATURE! Breze prides herself on being a unique artist of many styles in multiple mediums. Her work ranges from animal works to abstract oil paintings and funky graphic drawings. She draws realistic charcoal drawings\, wood-burnings and vibrant landscapes and has created a line of sculpted jewelry. Breze is based in Missoula\, MT and hoping to grow more arms so she can keep creating more and more! INSTAGRAM: @brezeart \nGlasswork by Kate Stone \nKate Stone\nKate Stone balances her career in science and ornithology with artistic pursuits that blend concepts of nature and sustainability. Last summer she started tumbling glass bottles in a solar-powered concrete mixer to create a smooth product quite like sea glass. She sells the glass for use in potted houseplants\, in terrariums and aquariums\, or in succulent gardens. She began combining the glass with dried plants from her garden to create botanical suncatchers and pendants. She’s expanded that work to include other natural items and waste from her home like coffee grounds and tea leaves. Kate will have a variety of glass and botanical products on hand and will share some techniques for integrating plant material into art projects.

SUMMARY:Canada's Ancient Amazon River and Its Rocky Mountain Headwaters
DESCRIPTION:Date: Wednesday\, December 11\nTime: 7:00-8:00 p.m.\nLocation: Montana Natural History Center\nCost: $7 for MNHC members\, $10 for non-members \nGET TICKETS! \nGeologic evidence shows that before the ice age\, a river the size of the Amazon once flowed from the Montana Rockies north to the Canadian Arctic. Continental glaciers overrode and destroyed the river in Canada\, and diverted its Montana headwaters to the Mississippi. The great river’s delta survived the ice age in the Labrador sea ice\, with tell-tale sediments eroded from its lost headwaters. At its greatest extent\, about 18 million years ago\, the river reached south to the Colorado Plateau and Great Basin\, but its headwaters were cut off piecemeal by tectonics\, volcanism\, and glaciation. This lecture\, given by geologist Jim Sears\, traces the Amazon’s twin from its origins to its destruction. \nAbout the Instructor: Dr. James W. Sears received his PhD from Queen’s University\, Canada\, in 1979\, and has taught at the University of Montana since 1982. He researches the structure and tectonics of the Rocky Mountain region. SUMMARY:Sip & Sketch: Create a Phenology Wheel
DESCRIPTION:Date: Wednesday\, December 18th\nTime: 7:00 – 9:00 p.m.\nLocation: Montana Natural History Center\nCost: $30 for MNHC members\, $35 for non-members \nAre you looking for a reflective\, inspiring\, fun new project for 2025? Start a daily phenology wheel! Phenology is the study of change in the natural world – when flowers bloom and go to seed\, when birds migrate\, when trees leaf out\, when butterflies emerge\, when the snow falls\, and so much more. Taking a few minutes each day to observe and record these changes can add up to something truly beautiful over time\, and we’d love to help you get started. And there’s no better time than just before the beginning of a new year! \nDuring this program you’ll create the template for your daily phenology wheel for January 2025\, and ponder the possibilities for how you’ll fill it in come the new year. You can experiment with colored pencils and other media\, practice different forms of lettering\, and look at various examples of other naturalists’ phenology wheels for inspiration. \nWe’ll provide drawing paper\, colored pencils\, watercolor pencils\, drawing pencils\, micron pens\, templates\, and rulers for you to use during the program\, but please feel free to take along your own favorite art materials. (A compass and protractor\, if you have them\, can also come in handy!) You may also want to purchase a sketchpad for this project (we recommend a larger size\, 8.5″x11″ or 9″x12″)\, but you can easily paste or tape your template into your own sketchbook later. \nTicket includes two beverages! We’ll have alcoholic and non-alcoholic options available.  \nAbout the instructor: Allison De Jong is the Communications Coordinator and Editor of Montana Naturalist magazine at the Montana Natural History Center. She has no formal art training but has picked up a thing or two about nature journaling in her 15 years at MNHC\, and is proof that anyone can learn to keep a nature journal or phenology wheel! She began her first phenology wheel in January 2021\, and has been phenologizing daily ever since. Join a team when you arrive or bring a crew to compete in Naturalist Trivia Night. The night’s theme is winter ecology. MNHC teaching naturalist Ryan Mahar is running the show and is excited to host another fun trivia night. \nThis is a FREE event\, but registration is required so we don’t overcrowd the space! \nREGISTER HERE!\nBYOB and snacks. \nHow does Naturalist Trivia Work? \n\nCome with a team or join up with new friends when you arrive. MNHC staff will help you find a table.\nThere are usually 4 rounds of questions each frequently on a common theme such as “Montana cats” or “poisonous plants.” Some rounds are verbal\, others are visual\, or auditory (guess that bird call!).\nAfter each round the answers are divulged and a score for each team is displayed.\nTwo hours later there will be a winner!
