We will connect with experts and hone our skills\, meeting at field locations around Missoula. \nThis club is only open to certified Master Naturalists (any state certification is valid). \nOctober Topic: A Naturalist Visits Costa Rica\, with Kelly Dix \nLocation: Montana Natural History Center \nTime: 2:00-4:00 p.m. \nJoin Kelly on a virtual tour through northwestern Costa Rica and learn about ¡Pura Vida! Costa Rica is a hotspot of biodiversity\, and Kelly is easily distracted by the beauty of the natural world. She was in awe of the butterflies and other insects\, birds\, flora\, and reptiles of the country\, from the beach to the rainforest to the dry forest. \nKelly is a retired toxicologist who is making up for years in the lab by spending her time wondering and wandering about the natural world. She is a certified Montana Master Naturalist and considers herself a “naturalist with a camera.” Kelly loves to share her discoveries with others. \nClub hosts: Master Naturalists Sarah Elsasser\, Bill Buseman\, and Elizabeth Johns \nInterested in joining? DESCRIPTION:Date: Friday\, October 23rd\nTime: 4:00-6:30 p.m.\nLocation: Meet at MNHC and we’ll bus over to the Univesrity\nCost: $20 MNHC members/$25 non-members \nNow is your chance for an insider’s look into some of UMZM’s most captivating specimens! \nREGISTER HERE! \nJoin us for a tour of the Philip L. Wright Zoological Collection at the University of Montana\, led by curator Katrina Derieg! Participants will get up close and personal with specimens from around the world while learning about how museum collections contribute to cutting edge science. \nThe UMZM is the repository for vertebrate specimens collected by University of Montana researchers\, as well as specimens from the Montana Natural Heritage Program\, the Montana Natural History Center\, Flathead Lake Biological Station\, the Montana Department of Fish\, Wildlife and Parks\, and various affiliated researchers and groups in the region. While the UMZM focuses on birds and mammals of the northern Rocky Mountains\, it is also home to scientifically and educationally valuable specimens from around the world. The museum has a growing number of tissues\, parasites\, photographs\, and other materials for documenting and studying patterns of biodiversity across space and through time. \nPair this tour with Katrina’s lecture on Montana Mammals at MNHC on October 21st! Learn more! \nABOUT KATRINA DERIEG: Katrina is a museum professional and mammalogist whose work bridges systematics\, natural history collections\, and public-facing science. She is currently Curator and Museum Collections & Outreach Coordinator at the Philip L. Wright Zoological Museum at the University of Montana\, following five years as Collections Manager of Vertebrate Zoology at the Natural History Museum of Utah. Her research focuses on the systematics\, phylogeography\, and ecology of small mammals of western North America\, with broader interests in integrating natural history collections and community-engaged science. She received both her B.A. and M.S. in Biology from the University of New Mexico.
