Go here for directions to the Fort Missoula Native Plant Garden. \nREGISTER HERE \nJoin Sydney Morical and Cathryn Rann of Wild Wanders as we saunter through the Fort Missoula Native Plant Garden discussing qualities and applications of the various edible and medicinal plants within before skipping down to the secret garden that is Slevin’s Island along the Clark Fork River to greet many a fresh spring green! Feel free to bring your plant guides\, notebook\, and pen\, if you’d like. \nThis little-known park right here in town is such a gem and an incredibly lush location to wander along\, full of fancy forts and hidden bits. We are doing this one early so as to beat the skeeters. A note on accessibility: this wander is 2.5 hours long\, with the first hour taking place within the Native Plant Garden\, which is flat and very accessible for all abilities. As we move down toward the river\, please note that a fair amount of the trail is not recommended for individuals with serious mobility limitations\, as it involves some uneven terrain and other obstacles. We apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate your understanding as we try to keep many of our events accessible to all. \nInstructors: Sydney Morical and Cathryn Raan are both passionate and longtime gatherers of wild food and medicine. They have also served on the Board of Directors for the Western Montana Mycological Association since 2018\, planning events\, teaching a wide variety of mushroom classes\, and keeping the fungal community engaged and connected. They both have experience in herbal medicine and agriculture (they will teach you about all the wonderful “weeds” around town)\, and a deep love of this land and all the plants living in their midst. SUMMARY:Tick Talk with Tom Schwan
DESCRIPTION:Date: Wednesday\, May 15\nTime: 7:00-8:00 p.m.\nLocation: Montana Natural History Center\nCost: $5 MNHC members\, $7 non-members\, students free \nIt’s tick season! \nTemper your fear with fascination. Ticks warrant our curiosity (what do they do in the winter?) and our caution. The connections between their unique biology\, transmission of pathogens\, and changing climate make for a timely tale. Dr. Tom G. Schwan\, retired after nearly 30 years of studying ticks and tick-borne diseases at Rocky Mountain Laboratories\, will also discuss practical prevention methods you can use while recreating this spring and summer. You may just find your inner scientist ignited as you identify ticks along the trail! \nTicks in western Montana have a special claim to fame: in the early 1900s\, seminal work on Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever in Missoula and the Bitterroot Valley led to the first description of a tick-borne disease of humans in North America. The term “zoonotic diseases” was coined by early Rocky Mountain Laboratories researchers to describe “diseases in nature communicable to man.” During this fascinating program you will also learn about the history and current research regarding ticks in western Montana. \nAbout the lecturer: Tom Schwan received his undergraduate training in biology at California State University\, Hayward\, where he also did his Master’s Degree in ecology. He next spent two years as a U.S. Peace Corps Volunteer working on wildlife-related projects at Lake Nakuru National Park\, Kenya. Tom then studied at the University of California\, Berkeley\, earning his Ph.D. in medical entomology in 1983. Tom then began three years of postdoctoral training at the Yale Arbovirus Research Unit at Yale University School of Medicine in New Haven\, Connecticut. While there\, he studied viruses infecting ticks associated with seabirds. In 1986\, Tom moved to Hamilton\, Montana\, to join the Rocky Mountain Laboratories (RML)\, which is part of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. There\, he was Chief of the Laboratory of Zoonotic Pathogens and Head of the Medical Entomology Section. He and his group investigated many tick-borne bacterial and viral pathogens\, however in recent years the work narrowed its focus to the biology of soft (argasid) ticks\, the interaction of spirochetes in their tick vectors\, improving serological tests for identifying human infections with spirochetes\, and identifying geographic areas where tick-borne relapsing fever poses a risk for humans in both western North America and West Africa. Tom retired in January 2014 but continues to be active through collaborations and writing. From 2013 through 2017\, Tom shared teaching an undergraduate course on vector-borne diseases at the University of Montana\, and in 2022 he taught a course for the University of Montana’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute. \nReserve your spot:

Pat Little\, Master Naturalist\, MNHC’s front desk associate\, and passionate birder\, will start with a classroom session to introduce the practice of birding by ear and provide tips and tricks. We will then walk along the Kim Williams trail from MNHC to listen and look for our vocal spring birds! If you want to sharpen your skills or are new to birding by ear this class is for you. Find out how identify birds by their calls and songs. Learn how to start slowly\, gain confidence\, and increase your bird song repertoire. The birds are always saying something as we wander around outside. Now you can find out who is saying what! \nActivity level: easy walking. \nMORNING SESSION 2: Geology and Ecology in the North Hills with Ian Watson and Christine Morris\nTime: 9:00-11:00 a.m.\nLocation: Meet at the Greenough Dr. Waterworks Trailhead paved parking area. NOTE: Parking spots can be limited. If possible\, try to carpool with a friend or two. Or arrive early to be able to park in the residential area on Monroe and walk to the trailhead. This could take up to 15 minutes. \nGet a bird’s eye view of the Missoula Valley and hear the incredible stories behind its landscape features: \n\nthe building of the Rockies\nshortening (Rattlesnake mountains)\nextension (Bitterroot and Missoula valleys)\ndeposition of Paleogene/Neogene strata and valley bounding faults\nBelt rocks\nAnd of course the famous Glacial Lake Missoula!\n\nThe ecology of the North Hills is directly tied to ancient and ongoing geologic processes. Here you will find plants adapted to high winds coming through Hellgate Canyon and dry gravely soils. These cushion and mat-forming plants display characteristics more commonly seen at higher elevations. Geologist Ian Watson and MNHC’s Community Programs Coordinator and Master Naturalist instructor Christine Morris will take you on a flat\, level walk in a loop from the parking lot. For those interested in more a vigorous and steeper climb\, you can continue on uphill with the instructors to view geological features and plants along the ridge. \nActivity level: easy to moderate/steep walking. \nLUNCH\, from 12:00-1:00 p.m.: Free hot dog/veggie dog BBQ at the Montana Natural History Center! Feel free to bring any item you would like to share. \nAFTERNOON SESSION 1: Journaling Missoula’s Springtime Native Plants with Nancy Seiler\nTime: 1:00-3:00 p.m.\nLocation: Meet at the Montana Natural History Center and walk to the Pierce Prairie (approximately .5 miles\, flat). We will meet indoors at MNHC if it is rainy and use herbarium specimens. \nJoin Nancy Seiler in Pierce Prairie to record native plants through close observation\, notes\, and drawing. Nancy will start with a tour of the location to point out the many plants that are blooming in mid-May here. She’ll start with a demonstration of how to start a drawing in your journal with tips on composition\, skeletal structure\, and what notes and call-outs to include. You will spread out to create a page in your journal. Nancy will be available to help you in your recording process. Informative handouts provided. Dress for the weather and bring something to sit on\, along with your journal\, pencil\, pen\, and watercolors\, if you’d like. In case of rain\, we will work from herbarium samples at MNHC. William will also discuss how you can get involved in an USFS/MNHC citizen science seed collecting project. Find out how to contribute to the stewardship of our national lands and get Master Naturalist hours while you hike in the forest this summer! \nActivity level: moderate walking\, uneven ground. \nAbout the instructor: William Schlegel a botanist and science educator from Ronan. Do you wonder why the winds are blowing from the southwest one day and from the northeast the next? Do you find thunderstorms exciting\, and wonder how hail is formed? And what exactly is graupel? In this quick introduction to meteorology we’ll look at global circulations\, jet streams\, winds\, clouds\, and thunderstorms. You’ll come away with a greater appreciation and understanding of the weather that you step into each day here in western Montana. \nAbout the instructor: Sarah Elsasser has been a lifelong weather geek\, always checking the weather before heading into the outdoors. But her interest really kicked into high gear when she began flying airplanes\, and realized that understanding weather was crucial to the safety and enjoyment of every flight. DESCRIPTION:This FREE event is sponsored by Bitterroot Audubon\, O’Hara Commons and Sustainability Center\, Blue Heron Nature Tours\, and the Montana Natural History Center. \nNature in nearly all manifestations has inspired poets since there were poets! And at least since the Roman poet Horace wrote Ars Poetica\, or the Art of Poetry\, in 19 BCE\, literature\, including poetry\, has sought to both instruct and delight. \nPoets in the ‘Root combines these two aims in an uncommon but simple way. One person reads a favorite poem or part of a poem that uses an element of nature to convey its message (we have a list if you want recommendations). Then\, the same or another person gives an explanation (5 minutes max) of some aspect of that nature element. The explanation focuses on nature interpretation\, not literary interpretation. Listeners get a bit of poetry and a bit of natural history. \nAnyone can volunteer to read a poem and/or offer nature interpretation. Most will read poems by others\, but if you’re a poet\, we’d love to hear your own work. This is a fun way for Master Naturalists to earn credit towards certification. \nWe’ll have refreshments\, including iced tea\, wine\, and snacks! Then we will take some time to explore the landscape. Each student will have an opportunity to create a first page out on the trail with guidance. Handouts will be provided about materials to use\, page composition/layout\, and basic nature journaling writing and drawing strategies. Be sure to dress warmly since we will be standing or sitting for periods of time. The only materials you need for this class are a chair\, pad\, or blanket for sitting outside\, a blank journal\, a pen\, and pencil. You may want to bring basic art supplies (colored pencils and watercolors) for adding color. SUMMARY:Berry Wander on the River Trail
DESCRIPTION:Date: Thursday\, August 15\nTime: 1:00 – 3:00 p.m.\nLocation: Montana Natural History Center \nREGISTER HERE \nJoin Sydney Morical and Cathryn Rann of Wild Wanders as we travel along the Clark Fork River Trail at the peak of Montana berry season. We’ll be delving into various edible and medicinal plants\, their properties\, and how we enjoy them. We won’t be going far on this wander (we never do) but we will be meeting many plant friends along the way so bring your plant guides\, notebook\, and pen if you’d like. There may be opportunities to harvest\, so bring a little bag just in case. \nWe’ll start off by sharing a bit about who we are and why wild food and medicine is such an important part of our lives before letting the rest of the group introduce themselves. After some brief housekeeping we will start our wander which will be under one mile in total. We generally discuss 20-30 different plants and fungi on our wanders and only harvest as a group when populations are abundant enough to support it. \nInstructors: Sydney Morical and Cathryn Raan are both passionate and longtime gatherers of wild food and medicine. They have also served on the Board of Directors for the Western Montana Mycological Association since 2018\, planning events\, teaching a wide variety of mushroom classes and keeping the fungal community engaged and connected. They both have experience in herbal medicine and agriculture (they will teach you about all the wonderful “weeds” around town)\, and a deep love of this land and all the plants living in their midst. SUMMARY:Rattlesnake Dam Removal Tour: Bring On the Trout!
DESCRIPTION:Date: Thursday\, September 5\nTime: 12:30-2:00 p.m.\nLocation: Meet at the parking area at the north end of Duncan Drive – click here for map. Look for Duncan drive in the lower left corner. Follow it to the green parking emblam on the map. Travel north on Duncan Drive\, which is on the west side of Rattlesnake creek. Go past the Waterworks trailhead turnoff and past the North Hills trailhead parking. Park at the end of Duncan Drive at the power station. \nRegister now \nIn 2020 the Rattlesnake Creek dam was removed and the floodplain restored\, creating a functional and natural connection between the headwaters of Rattlesnake Creek and the Clark Fork River for the first time in 115 years. That project resulted in more than 10 stream miles reconnected for native fish; five acres of wetland and floodplain restoration and preservation\, .5 miles of stream reconstruction\, and 16\,000 planted trees and shrubs. \nTake a tour with Rob Roberts\, Trout Unlimited’s senior project manager\, to learn about the history of Missoula’s water supply\, the results of the lower dam removal\, and future work to improve the fishery and recreation through the removal and management of 10 dams in the Rattlesnake Wilderness Area. This is your chance to find out how those cool alpine waters benefit our westslope cutthroat trout\, bull trout\, and so much more! \nInstructor: Like many Trout Unlimited staff\, Rob followed a nontraditional path in his career development\, graduating from college with a degree in psychology and then honing his community development skills in the Peace Corps in Madagascar. Rob initially spearheaded TU’s national youth education program before moving west in 2004 to start TU’s growing western mine reclamation and watershed restoration program. Rob has worked as a project manager for TU out of the Missoula office for almost 20 years\, with one hiatus to sail across the Pacific Ocean. Rob is typically responsible for overall project management and stakeholder coordination and takes the lead role in grant development\, contracting for planning and investigation\, permitting and stream restoration design. When not at work\, you’ll find him paragliding\, hunting for wild mushrooms\, and scuba diving in Montana’s lakes and rivers. \nActivity Level: .8 mile walking each way. Photo by Erick Greene \nDate: Wednesday\, September 18\, 2024\nTime: 6:30-8:00 p.m.\nLocation: Montana Natural History Center\nCost: $10 MNHC members\, $15 non-members \nREGISTER HERE. \nOspreys are unique fishing raptors\, and we are lucky they are so abundant along the rivers and lakes in Montana. Since they are at the top of aquatic food chains\, they can tell us a lot about the health of our rivers and streams. In this talk\, we will give an overview of the biology of this fascinating bird\, and tell you about their migration patterns\, longevity\, and summarize our long-term studies on heavy metals in Ospreys\, and what that tells us about the clean-up of the Upper Clark Fork River – largest EPA Superfund site in the US. \nMeet our Guest Speakers \nRob Domenech\, Executive Director: Rob began exploring much of western Montana during the 1990s to locate a suitable site for establishing the first mountaintop raptor migration banding study in Montana. He founded Raptor View Research Institute (RVRI) in 2004 to facilitate this ongoing in-depth research of Golden Eagle and other raptor migration ecology. Rob graduated from the University of Montana in 2002 with a Wildlife Biology degree. When not in the field\, you can find Rob promoting awareness of raptor ecology to youth and community groups. Rob enjoys whitewater kayaking\, snowboarding\, mountain biking\, hiking and bird watching. \nAdam Shreading\, Senior Research Biologist: Adam graduated from the University of Montana in 2009 with a degree in Wildlife Biology. He began working exclusively with raptors in 2007 and has monitored populations of various species across Montana. Adam first came to RVRI as a seasonal field biologist during the fall migration of 2010 and became increasingly involved in our field studies over the next two years. Since becoming a full-time member of our team in August 2012\, Adam has been a valuable asset in the planning\, execution\, and reporting of our field-based activities. \nBrian Busby\, Research Biologist: Brian first joined RVRI as a seasonal field biologist in 2015 after graduating from SUNY ESF with a degree in conservation biology. He left after four years to earn his Master’s in Raptor Biology at Boise State University studying Barn Owls but returned full-time to RVRI in 2024 to help run research projects\, coordinate education programs\, and manage\, analyze\, and publish data. Outside of work\, Brian enjoys spending time either in the mountains or in his vegetable garden. \nErick Greene is Professor Emeritus in the Division of Biological Sciences and in the Wildlife Biology Program at The University of Montana. He grew up in Quebec\, Canada\, with twin passions for music and nature. Erick dropped out of high school and lived for a year in the Galapagos Islands\, working as a researcher on Darwin’s Finches. He then worked on seabirds 800 miles north of the Arctic Circle with the Canadian Wildlife Service. He returned for undergraduate studies at Dalhousie University in Halifax\, Nova Scotia\, where he studied biology\, music and mathematics\, and then received a PhD from Princeton University. SUMMARY:Naturalist Field Day: Explore Primm Meadow
DESCRIPTION:Date: Wednesday\, October 2\nTime: 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.\nLocation: Meet at the Montana Natural History Center. We’ll travel to Primm Meadow in the MNHC bus. \nFeel the majesty of an old-growth\, open stand of ponderosa pines as you explore the history and magnificent ecology of Primm Meadow. This park-like grove has been carefully utilized and managed by humans for thousands of years. Native Americans and homesteaders practiced understory burns to increase productivity of shrubs and crops. The ponderosas thrived in response\, developing a resiliency to larger wildfires. Surrounded by forest that has been logged and replanted or burned\, Primm Meadow is a window back in time. \nSteven Kloetzel\, Western Land Steward for The Nature Conservancy\, will be our guide as we explore this special place. He will discuss restoration work\, fire ecology\, history\, and more. \nDifficulty: Easy/moderate. We will be driving through the gate right to the grove and walking in a loop. We will be walking/standing for up to 2.5 hours. We will have a picnic lunch\, seated on the ground. DESCRIPTION:Date: Thursday\, October 3\, 2024\nTime: 12:00-1:00 p.m.\nLocation: Montana Natural History Center\nCost: FREE \nJoin the Montana Natural History Center and Climate Smart Missoula for a Lunch & Learn program\, Protecting Pollinators and Native Plants\, during Climate Solutions Week 2024! \nOur communities thrive with the biodiversity of native plants. Insects\, birds\, and mammals have evolved to rely on our native plant communities. We can support the vibrancy of local habitats and survival of fellow species by planting and caring for native plants. During this program you will learn how to make your own seed balls to distribute native seeds! \nFall is the perfect time for native seed planting. Many require the cold snap of winter to germinate in the spring. Seed balls are easy to transport and can be tossed in a garden patch or abandoned weedy area. We will provide directions on creating them and will have materials available for the first 20 people to make one to take home. \nBring your lunch! \nAfter we make the seed balls we will screen a film about plants and pollinators.
