Poole will help you hone your nature journaling skills. Incredible reference specimens from MNHC’s collection including mammals\, birds\, insects\, bone\, horn\, shells\, and rocks will be used for guided practice exercises and longer study time. Discover techniques to bring your drawings to life. Practice with line weight and density\, ratio and perspective\, detail and focus and much more. \n“Art is harmony parallel with nature.”- Paul Cezanne \nMaterials: We will have everything you need! Poole has worn many hats: Adjunct Professor of Paleontology\, scientific illustrator\, art teacher\, and paleontology field instructor. Jason has excavated dinosaurs on three continents\, including Africa and South and North America. Paralititan\, Dreadnoughtus and Suuwassea are three dinosaurs Jason has worked on. All three were new to science when discovered and two are supermassive titanosaurs. Jason is also a paleontological artist who has published in National Geographic and whose art work appears in many museum and private collections. The trip will focus on waterfowl\, raptors\, and early spring migrants as well as our resident year-round species\, and is appropriate for birders of all ages and abilities. Come meet the artist\, and enjoy an inspiring night at MNHC! \nLight snacks and beverages provided. \nFrom “Lives and Lessons of Zoo Animals” series by Nicole Emlen \nAbout Nicole Emlen:\nI am a graduating senior at the University of Montana studying Biology. Biology has always been part of my story. I see beauty and diversity in every life form—from grizzly bears to wood frogs\, crane flies\, and glacier lilies. I have been privileged to grow up surrounded by science\, and I’m in the process of cultivating my own relationship with it. For me\, science and biology are intertwined with art and self-expression. \nPhotography helps me capture some of the beauty that exists in the world and share what I see with others. Beauty is all around us\, whether we notice it or not\, and photographs give us a chance to study nature with a perspective we couldn’t get in real time. I hope to curate curiosity with my photographs and inspire people to ask questions\, rather than dismissing something because it’s gross or scary or cute. \nI aspire to work with animals\, either at a zoo\, sanctuary\, or educational non-profit. It is unfortunate that so many animals are in captivity\, and while many are there for good reasons\, it means they won’t live like they could in the wild. My goal is to make the life of every individual I work with better in some way and share their stories with the world. There is so much we can learn from other forms of life\, and I strive to listen when they\nspeak.

Through discussion about indigenous peoples’ ways of life\, value systems\, tribal languages\, and stories created long before Montana was established in 1889\, participants learn about a personal\, soulful relationship to our natural world. Participants also better understand how these elements sustain our identity through history and in modern times. How can our tribal stories and ways of knowing elevate others in their understanding of identity? Participants walk away with a fresh look at who they are and appreciation for the landscape from time immemorial. Audience members ponder responsibility and stewardship to the earth through a tribal lens and discuss ways to act for future generations and our natural world relations. \nEvent features a screening of the film Life in the Land: Amskapi Piikani\, produced by produced by Lara Tomov with Stories for Action\, and co-produced by Lailani Upham of Iron Shield Creative. \nAmskapi Piikani [People of the Blackfeet Nation] have interacted with every element of this landscape\, across much of what is today known as Montana\, since time immemorial. This area of Northwest Montana\, home to the Blackfeet Nation\, stands the mountains which Piikani refer to as the “backbone of the world”. Hear unique perspectives from Amskapi Piikani as they carry on the holistic approaches and reciprocal relationships that have always been a part of their culture and traditions\, in ways that empower their community as they move into the future. \nAbout Lailani Upham: Lailani Upham is an Amskapi Pikuni (Blackfeet Nation) tribal member\, and a descendent from the Aaniiih\, Nakoda\, and Dakota tribes. She is journalist\, educator and business developer in indigenous stories and culture. \nPlease note that this program is NOT at MNHC! We’ll be gathering at the Missoula Public Library\, in Cooper Room B on the 4th floor. \n\n*Update 4.3.2025: Today\, it was announced that Humanities Montana has lost their federal funding. We are very sorry to share this news\, which means important programs like Montana Conversations are no longer supported by their grants and resources. MNHC was able to offer this program for free to the public\, because of our partnership with Humanities Montana. And because of the generosity of our community members\, we are still able to offer this event. In order to subsidize the costs of this program\, we are asking for a suggested $10 donation. SUMMARY:Printmaking Workshop with Open AIR Artist Amanda Baker

Registration required. \nMNHC is excited to host Open Air Artist Amanda Baker! Amanda will be in residence at MNHC starting in early April until early May. \nAmanda Baker (b.1994) is a Brooklyn-based interdisciplinary artist and educator. She received an MFA in printmaking from Pratt Institute in 2024\, and a BFA from Massachusetts College of Art and Design in 2016. Her work investigates 19th-century naturalist illustration through a contemporary print-based lens. Amanda has been a former artist in residence at COPE NYC\, has curated and shown work in numerous group exhibitions\, and was a 2023 Pratt Graduate Student Engagement Fund recipient. She also participates in various NYC-based bird and wildlife conservation advocacy groups and teaches community printmaking workshops. \nWORKSHOP\nAmanda is hosting a printmaking workshop at MNHC on April 16th. This workshop brings naturalist illustration and printmaking traditions into a contemporary context. Participants of all experience levels will draw an animal or specimen from the museum’s collection and translate that drawing into a linoleum block print. \nParticipants will be guided through drawing specimens from the museum’s collection\, carving images into easy-carve linoleum blocks\, applying ink\, and pressing their images onto heavyweight printmaking paper. \nAudience: This workshop is suitable for all ages 12+. Please bring your grown-up if you are under 16.\nWhat to bring: Everything you need will be provided!\nCost: The workshop is free\, but a suggested donation is appreciated!\nRegistration: Registration is required and will close 24 hours before the workshop begins. Bus is limited to 12 passengers.\nCost: $35 \nREGISTER HERE\nDid you know that some of the landscapes you see in the Bitterroot Valley were created when Glacial Lake Missoula covered the valley as far as Lake Como during the Ice Ages? The flood features are subtle but an essential part of the story. These include lake lines\, beach deposits\, and erratics. The bus trip will also include a stop at the Ravalli County Museum and will also involve a stop at Lake Como. \nDeadline for registration is Monday\, May 5th.\nBring your own lunch and water. These short excursions will have you walking away with new curiosities and knowledge about our historic hub’s culture and landscape. \nField Trips are optional and are offered as an added way for MNHC to show our gratitude for your attendance at our Spring Luncheon and support of our scholarship program. There’s a little something for everyone and every interest (please choose only ONE option). Birding Under the Beartracks\nMNHC Teaching Naturalist Ryan Mahar takes you under the Beartracks Bridge on a guided birding tour. Spring offers unique opportunities to see and hear some of Montana’s most charismatic avifauna\, right in the heart of town. The bridge is a great vantage point to spot cliff swallows\, yellow warblers\, osprey\, great blue herons\, bald eagles\, and common goldeneyes\, just to name a few. No experience is required\, and all are encouraged to come! Ryan will also offer a few tips on birding by ear for beginning birders. \n2. A Geologic Sense of Place\nTake a walk with us through Missoula’s ancient past\, as we discuss and look at the geologic and biological history written all over its landscape. It is easy to forget that Missoula currently resides at the bottom of what was once an enormous ancient lakebed of one of the most influential geologic features of North America: Glacial Lake Missoula. This lake was so massive that when it finally drained it scarred the majority of three western states\, rewriting the ecology and topography of our region. Understanding and remembering these calamities of our not-so-distant past are the crucial key to understanding the context for the beloved natural landscape we enjoy around us today. Led by MNHC Teaching Naturalist Kevin Niehaus. \n3. Whoopsie Boop! Arnica Showcase with Wild Wanders\nJoin Sydney Morical and Cathryn Raan of Wild Wanders to learn about the nitty gritty on Montana’s favorite pain reliever\, arnica. We’ll learn how to identify arnica\, first aid applications\, chronic use cases\, and how we craft the most potent medicine. This “field trip” takes place at Governor’s Room in the Florence Building and is a good option for guests with limited mobility or who would prefer to stay inside. \n4. What Built This City: Geology\nBruce Baty\, geologist and educator\, will lead you on this fascinating downtown tour to visit select iconic buildings\, learning about both their geologic and cultural history. Bruce will identify the various rocks used in their construction and the stories they tell about Montana’s geology. Gain a fun\, fresh perspective on Missoula’s downtown buildings! \n5. Carnal Enterprises with Unseen Missoula\nWhile most in Missoula are familiar with the name Mary Gleim or the brief history of Front Street’s “red light district\,” many of the district’s stories remain untold\, including Gleim’s and her businesses. From 1889-1917\, West Front and Main Streets became home to a vibrant “restricted” community of working women\, Chinese laborers\, African American soldiers\, and immigrants who built the environment we as Missoulians have come to love today. This field trip discusses the district through the historical lenses of sex\, race\, class\, and occupation in order to create a broader social understanding against the backdrop of the remaining built environment. Led by Sophia Etier of Unseen Missoula. \n6. Clark Fork’s Lost Islands and Hidden Histories\nThe Clark Fork River is the lifeblood of the landscape and conduit to cultural connection in our region. Comparing what we see today to historical maps and photos\, we will rewind the river’s path and discover hidden treasures along the way. Learn about lost islands and a regenerating aquifer\, beavers and bull trout and much more. Led by MNHC Naturalist and Community Programs Coordinator Christine Morris.

Through birding tips and bird stories – some wild\, some comical\, some incredible – you will enter the feathered world of song and drama. \nBirdwatching is one of the fastest growing outdoor activities in the U.S. It can be done anywhere – your backyard\, local parks\, across the country\, or exotic locales. And identifying birds is a challenging and satisfying pastime – or\, in the case of instructor Pat Jamieson\, an overwhelming passion. With all the variety of birds\, where do you begin? Join naturalist\, birder\, and retired National Bison Range ranger Pat Jamieson for a two-hour walk in Greenough Park\, where we will learn how to use field guides\, binoculars\, and phone apps to identify birds. Best of all\, we’ll be out ENJOYING birds! Once you learn to identify birds\, you can become part of a growing number of citizen scientists who support conservation of our feathered friends. \nInstructor: Pat Jamieson is a retired National Bison Range ranger. While there she taught people of all ages about the flora and fauna of the Bison Range. We will slowly hike up to the saddle of Mount Jumbo and see up to 25 species of wildflowers\, from arrowleaf balsamroot to kittentails and death camas. We will discuss their roles in the landscape for pollinators and other animals and conclude the walk at a unique cushion plant community. Jason is also signing copies of his education and coloring book\, Dinosaurs Behaving Badly. \nCurious artists\, illustrators\, and wildlife enthusiasts of all ages are welcome! \nDrinks and light refreshments provided. \nAbout Jason C. Poole: Jason has worn many hats\, Adjunct Professor of Paleontology\, Scientific Illustrator\, art teacher\, and Paleontology field instructor. Jason has excavated dinosaurs on three continents\, including Africa\, South and North America. Paralititan\, Dreadnoughtus and Suuwassea are three dinosaurs worked on by Poole\, all were new to science when discovered and two of which are supermassive titanosaurs. Poole is also a Paleontological Artist who has published in National Geographic and whose art work appears in many museum and private collections. \nJason resides in Missoula Montana and can often be found sketching in the studio and the great outdoors.
