Learn techniques for shape\, shading\, color\, and line and the best tools to achieve the results you want. \nInstructor: Jason C. Poole has worn many hats\, Adjunct Professor of Paleontology\, Scientific Illustrator\, art teacher\, and Paleontology field instructor. Jason has excavated dinosaurs on three continents\, including Africa\, South and North America. Paralititan\, Dreadnoughtus and Suuwassea are three dinosaurs worked on by Poole\, all were new to science when discovered and two of which are supermassive titanosaurs. Poole is also a Paleontological Artist who has published in National Geographic and whose art work appears in many museum and private collections. Take inspiration from our vast collection of specimens to create an animal portrait using the wet felting process. You will cut and layer pre-felted pieces. Water\, soap\, and agitation felt the wool fibers together creating an amazing work of art! These textural pieces can combine the character of the animal along with evocative artistic elements of shape and color. Bring an animal of your choice to life through art. The animals can be full body silhouettes with shapes or faces or even imaginary animals. \nThis class is great for ages 8 and up! \nInstructor: Melissa Thompson is a Missoula based multi-media artist. She received her BFA in drawing from the University of Montana in 1996. She has been a tattoo artist for 24 years\, and in addition\, she is a faux taxidermy maker\, body painter and special effects makeup artist. She received her MA in Prosthetic Effects in 2022 from Falmouth University in Cornwall England. She occasionally teaches these various skills around Missoula\, and exhibits work throughout the country. And they are works of art in their own right. Accentuate this role of ‘journal as art piece’ by choosing your covers and binding the pages yourself with an elegant stitch pattern. Japanese binding is a centuries old book making form where sheets are folded down the center\, hole punched\, and sewn along the spine. Keep this journal for recording the upcoming year\, or give it as a gift to a naturlist in your life this holiday season. Each book will have 12 watercolor pages\, one for each month of the year. MNHC teaching naturalist Ryan Mahar is running the show and is excited to host another fun trivia night. \nThis is a FREE event\, but registration is required so we don’t overcrowd the space! \nREGISTER HERE.\nBYOB and snacks. \nHow does Naturalist Trivia Work? \n\nCome with a team or join up with new friends when you arrive. MNHC staff will help you find a table.\nThere are usually 4 rounds of questions each frequently on a common theme such as “Montana cats” or “poisonous plants.” Some rounds are verbal\, others are visual\, or auditory (guess that bird call!).\nAfter each round the answers are divulged and a score for each team is displayed.\nTwo hours later there will be a winner!

By shopping here\, you not only bring home one-of-a-kind gifts but also support our talented local artists and our Montana community. \nSo\, join us at MNHC’s Holiday Bazaar\, and enjoy a little magic of this special time of year by giving back\, supporting local artists\, and nurturing a love for learning and nature. \nWe look forward to celebrating the season with you! \nMEET the ARTISTS \nArtwork by Erin McNeill \nErynn McNeill / Up Moss Creek\nErynn McNeill is an artist\, botanist\, and scientific illustrator. While obtaining their Bachelor of Science in Biology they worked throughout the backcountry of Montana\, Idaho and Alaska tracking animals and recording plant species until the fall of 2020 when isolation brought back an old love of creating art. Taking inspiration from their wilderness experiences\, they created Up Moss Creek Studio in 2021 as a habitat for experimentation where they combine their knowledge of scientific illustration\, botany\, mycology and multiple art mediums to create realistic figure paintings\, jewelry and art objects that highlight the hidden mossy worlds within western Montana’s diverse ecosystems. They are currently based in the Bitterroot Mountains of Montana where they share a home with their partner Brandon\, dog Dagwood\, and cat Orion. These are the types of questions that he love to explore! Each photographic outing affords an opportunity to practice\, implement and evolve this practice. Adelheid has a B.A. in Political Science and Studio Art (with minors in German and Horticulture) and a M.S. in Plant and Soil Science. She works as a Grants Administrator for Missoula County. Pieces that feel like a reunion of sorts. Using found items from artist Cass Stoltzfus’ travels near and far\, each piece speaks with a voice of its own. The dream is that they encourage you to not have to choose between beautiful and strong. Marrow Lee’s mission is to create pieces to inspire your spirit to wear through each phase of life. These designs are shaped by the rivers that flow through Montana\, the slopes of humbling mountains\, and the days that have brought untouchable happiness. Wildflowers captured her heart at an early age and drew Angie to botanical studies and to art. This interest led to a decades long career as a botanist and scientist with the National Park Service and Forest Service working in wildland landscapes across the western US. Her pictures are steeped in whimsy\, humor\, and a love for story – sometimes with a dash of sweetness\, other times with a pinch of saltiness. There is so much beauty in life and for Breze it all comes down to the simple things. It’s the world of details in a single piece of pine bark. Or\, the catchy melody comprised by just a few tones. She is not an artist who sticks to the same subject matter for an extended period of time; life is too short for that. Although she does have a main muse–NATURE! Breze prides herself on being a unique artist of many styles in multiple mediums. Her work ranges from animal works to abstract oil paintings and funky graphic drawings. She draws realistic charcoal drawings\, wood-burnings and vibrant landscapes and has created a line of sculpted jewelry. Breze is based in Missoula\, MT and hoping to grow more arms so she can keep creating more and more! Last summer she started tumbling glass bottles in a solar-powered concrete mixer to create a smooth product quite like sea glass. She sells the glass for use in potted houseplants\, in terrariums and aquariums\, or in succulent gardens. She began combining the glass with dried plants from her garden to create botanical suncatchers and pendants. She’s expanded that work to include other natural items and waste from her home like coffee grounds and tea leaves. Kate will have a variety of glass and botanical products on hand and will share some techniques for integrating plant material into art projects.

No prior experience is necessary. Please just bring your open mind – a willingness to experiment and think in new ways. \nThis refreshing four-hour evening workshop is an invitation to explore both our interior and exterior ecosystems\, paying attention to the quiet or invisible things all around us. We will imagine the different ways in which humans and animals receive and send messages\, and how those messages traverse time and geography. We’ll consider how messages are stored in individual and collective memories\, in landscapes\, and in water. \nWe will discuss the benefit of taking notes – field notes and observations\, as well as notes from our interiors – considering two distinct spheres of noticing. We will explore strategies for “unsticking” our creative selves\, even on the darkest of winter days. Calling on poetry\, science\, images\, and our own imaginations\, we will spiral between internal and external systems\, exploring new forms and sensations in our physical bodies\, our thinking minds\, and our creative work. \nYou can expect to come away with material to spark future writing projects. You will receive a reading and resource list one week before the workshop\, meant to orient you and offer context for our time together. You will leave the workshop connected to an emerging community of local writers and creators. \nInstructor Chandra Brown is an educator\, river guide\, and writer originally from Alaska. She has worked within the realm of river conservation since her 2010 Fulbright grant to Ecuador\, and she founded Freeflow Institute in 2017. Time to contemplate ice ages and glacial lakes.Time for the Glacial Lake Missoula Chapter of the Ice Age Floods Institute’s Cabin Fever Lecture!  Warm up your curiosity about those iconic strandlines we can see from town with a lecture from renowned geologist James W. Sears. \nNew “LiDAR ” mapping techniques may imply that the famous Lake Missoula strandlines on Mount Sentinel and Mount Jumbo record only one draining of the ice-age lake. The draining coincided with massive erosion at the bottom of the lake\, but passive lowering of lake level at the top\, marked by short-term strandlines cut a few inches into thin colluvial soil on the mountainsides. \nAbout the Instructor: Dr. James W. Sears received his PhD from Queen’s University\, Canada\, in 1979\, and has taught at the University of Montana since 1982. He researches the structure and tectonics of the Rocky Mountain region. Jim has authored dozens of publications and geologic maps.

DESCRIPTION:Date: February 8\, 2025\nTime: 1:00-3:00 p.m.\nLocation: The Barn at Teller\, 1180 Chaffin Ln Corvallis\, Montana\nCost: FREE \nJoin MNHC and Teller Wildlife Refuge for Poets in the ‘Root! \nNature in nearly all manifestations has inspired poets since there were poets! And at least since the Roman poet Horace wrote Ars Poetica or the Art of Poetry in 19BC\, literature\, including poetry\, sought to both instruct and delight. \nPoets in the ‘Root combines these two aims in an uncommon but simple way. One person reads a poem or part of a poem that uses an element of nature to convey its message. Then\, the same or another person gives an explanation (5 minutes max) of some aspect of that nature element. The explanation focuses on nature interpretation\, not literary interpretation. Listeners get a bit of poetry and a bit of natural history. \nThis is a FREE event\, but registration is required. \nWe’ll have refreshments\, including coffee\, tea\, wine\, and snacks! \nAnyone can volunteer to read poetry and/or offer the nature interpretation. This is a fun way for Master Naturalists to earn credit towards their certification. But finding the time to write can often be challenging. This writing “hush hour(s)” is designed to provide nature writers with a quiet\, supportive setting to work on your craft. This isn’t a workshop; this is space to write. \nIn this group\, we’ll spend roughly the first 20 minutes inviting individuals to share what projects you’re working on\, questions you might have about your work\, suggest resources\, any hurdles or writing blocks\, and writing successes! Then we’ll write\, write\, write. \nBring your notebook\, journal\, or computer. Writing prompts will be available if you’re feeling stuck\, or just want to play with words. This class is a great follow-up to January’s session with new activities and time to practice your technique. It is also a wonderful immersion and introduction to nature journaling if this is your first time taking the class! \nIllustrator and incurable sketcher Jason C. Poole will help you hone your nature journaling skills. Incredible reference specimens from MNHC’s collection including mammals\, birds\, insects\, bone\, horn\, shells\, and rocks will be used for guided practice exercises and longer study time. Discover techniques to bring your drawings to life. Practice with line weight and density\, ratio and perspective\, detail and focus and much more. \n“Art is harmony parallel with nature.”- Paul Cezanne \nMaterials: We will have everything you need! Poole has worn many hats: Adjunct Professor of Paleontology\, scientific illustrator\, art teacher\, and paleontology field instructor. Jason has excavated dinosaurs on three continents\, including Africa and South and North America. Paralititan\, Dreadnoughtus and Suuwassea are three dinosaurs Jason has worked on. All three were new to science when discovered and two are supermassive titanosaurs. Jason is also a paleontological artist who has published in National Geographic and whose art work appears in many museum and private collections.
