SUMMARY:Lichen Field Day with Tim Wheeler
DESCRIPTION:Date: Saturday\, November 8\, 2025\nTime: 10:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.\nLocation: MNHC\, walk along Kim Williams trail\nCost: $60 MNHC members/$65 non-members \nREGISTER HERE!\n\nDelve deep into the study of lichens and never look at your forest the same way again. \nThe Missoula valley has a high diversity of lichen species in an array of beautiful forms. Learn about the ecology and biology of lichens as you become comfortable identifying common species. \nJoin us this fall for a lichen presentation and field trip with Tim Wheeler\, lichenologist and mycologist from the University of Montana. We will begin in the classroom with an introduction to lichens slideshow followed by a walk along the Kim Williams trail exploring saxicolous and terricolous lichen communities and then a short jaunt up the Smokejumpers Trail to investigate the epiphytic lichen communities. \nInstructor: Tim Wheeler is a biologist specializing in fungi (lichenized and otherwise). He has been teaching\, studying\, and publishing on Montana’s mycota for over 20 years.  He is currently a research scientist for the Division of Biological Sciences at UM working on the genetics and genomics of the tree of life. \nCheck out this National Geographic video of UM researchers’ lichen discovery. \nActivity Level (please read): Moderate. Most of the walking is on flat ground. The Smokejumper Trail section is steeper and a dirt trail. This program involves multiple hours of walking and standing. Lunch will be most likely be eaten seated on the ground. Taking inspiration from their wilderness experiences\, they created Up Moss Creek Studio in 2021 as a habitat for experimentation where they combine their knowledge of scientific illustration\, botany\, mycology and multiple art mediums to create realistic figure paintings\, jewelry and art objects that highlight the hidden mossy worlds within western Montana’s diverse ecosystems. They are currently based in the Bitterroot Mountains of Montana where they share a home with their partner Brandon\, dog Dagwood\, and cat Orion. She grew up watching her mother paint and sketch ideas for clothing she wanted to create. Watercolor was a perfect medium as it was light\, portable and could go on any adventure. It has really helped Diane see her surroundings in a more appreciative and detailed way. She loves the colors and free flowing way the paint goes on the paper. It seems to be in tune with the unpredictability\, adaptability and movement of nature. Silk painting has the free spirit of watercolor with the added advantage that you can wear it and it feels so good. \nJason C. Poole / Paleo Artist: Painting\, Sketches\, & More \nJason C. Poole has worn many hats\, Adjunct Professor of Paleontology\, Scientific Illustrator\, art teacher\, and Paleontology field instructor. Jason has excavated dinosaurs on three continents\, including Africa\, South and North America. Paralititan\, Dreadnoughtus and Suuwassea are three dinosaurs worked on by Poole\, all were new to science when discovered and two of which are supermassive titanosaurs. Poole is also a Paleontological Artist who has published in National Geographic and whose art work appears in many museum and private collections. INSTAGRAM: @jasoncpoolepaleoartist \nPat Kittelson / Bee-cycled Crayons\nPat Kittelson grew up in Minnesota and graduated from the University of Minnesota college of education. She went on to complete a master’s degree in library science with an emphasis in early children’s literature. Pat\, working with illustrator Brooke Connor\, started writing books for children in 1978 for the Bryce Canyon Natural History Association and created a series of books focused on scientists tackling environmental problems using homespun research. Similarly\, the city of Missoula’s diverse cultural heritage has been shaped and transformed by the river as well over the course of the last two centuries. In this presentation\, guests will not only gain natural historical knowledge of the Clark Fork River\, but also the innate partnership between cultural and natural heritage landscapes. This presentation will primarily examine the heritage of Missoula’s restricted communities between 1860 and 1940. \nLight refreshments provided. \nABOUT Sophia Etier: Sophia is a longtime Bitterroot Valley local and public historian\, focusing her research on the development of local Montana heritage. Sophia has previously partnered with numerous Montana organizations in hopes of developing authentic community histories including the Montana Historical Society\, Daly Mansion\, Historic Museum at Fort Missoula\, Missoula Historic Preservation Office\, and the Missoula Public Library. DESCRIPTION:Date: Friday\, December 12\nLocation: Montana Natural History Center\nTime: 5:00-6:30 p.m.\nCost: FREE and open to the public \nJoin us for a new gallery opening at the Montana Natural History Center\, featuring work by Missoula photographer Peggy Christian! \nIn conjunction with the new Naturalist Field Station exhibit featuring the University of Montana Herbarium\, this show contains a collection of photographic prints that explore the beauty of botanical forms found in three different herbariums. \nFrom UM’s\, 16 of the most popular Montana wildflowers\, chosen by the Missoula Native Plant Society\, as well as a selection of specimens from Glacier Park’s Belly River herbarium are rendered in cyanotype. This is one of the earliest photographic printing processes and was used by Anna Atkins for her images of her seaweed collection in the first photographically illustrated book in 1843. In addition there is a collection of hand-painted photographs using botanical inks from John Pierce’s herbarium of the Rattlesnake. \nPeggy Christian is a Missoula photographer\, writer\, and book artist who works in a variety of historical alternative printing processes and is an herbarium aficionado. \nLight refreshments provided.

In September of 1967 he enrolled in a master’s graduate program in geology at the University of Montana. Some stories – particularly trickster stories – were allowed to be told only in winter\, or when the land was covered with snow. This winter\, spend an evening with Anishinaabe/Métis storyteller and 11th Montana poet laureate Chris La Tray and the Montana Natural History Center in\ndipping our toes fireside into this ancient\, inter-tribal tradition. \nTHIS IS AN OUTDOOR\, WINTER EVENT\nThis is an evening\, wintry\, outdoor event – there will be cold and snow. Please dress for the weather and note that there will be very limited artificial light. There will be an outdoor bonfire to keep us warm and light our way. Guests should bring their own camp chairs (MNHC will NOT be providing). A porta potty will be onsite and available for use. \nIncludes hot beverages (such as cider and hot chocolate). \nAbout Chris La Tray: Chris La Tray is a Métis storyteller\, a descendent of the Pembina Band of the mighty Red River of the North and a citizen of the Little Shell Tribe of Chippewa Indians. His third book\, Becoming Little Shell: A Landless Indian’s Journey Home\, was published by Milkweed Editions on August 20\, 2024 and has received a number of accolades including a Pacific Northwest Book Award and a Writing the West Award\, and Best Memoir of the Year selections from both People and Esquire magazines. His first book\, One-Sentence Journal: Short Poems and Essays from the World at Large won the 2018 Montana Book Award and a 2019 High Plains Book Award. His book of haiku and haibun poetry\, Descended from a Travel-worn Satchel\, was published in 2021 by Foothills Publishing. Chris served as the 2025 Kittredge Distinguished Visiting Writer at the University of Montana and was awarded the 2025 Montana Heritage Keeper Award by the Montana Historical Society. Chris writes the weekly newsletter “An Irritable Métis” and lives near Frenchtown\, Montana. We will then move into the field to practice our skills and gain greater understanding of raptor behavior and ecology. \nNinepipe National Wildlife Refuge and the Mission Valley provide spectacular raptor viewing opportunities including: rough legged hawks\, harriers\, kestrels\, merlins\, bald eagles\, red-tailed hawks\, and more. \nInstructor: Brian Williams sharpened his birding chops under the Montana Natural History Center’s first staff naturalist – Charles Miller – in the early 2000s. Since then he has worked as a professional bird guide in South Texas\, staff naturalist at MNHC\, 4th-grade teacher at Hawthorne Elementary School\, and\, most recently\, a Forester for the State of Montana. He coordinated the Christmas Bird Count at the Ninepipe NWR for 10 years. \n\nWe will meet at the Montana Natural History Center and travel by bus to the field site.\nActivity level: easy. minimal walking\, less than one mile.
