Photo by Erick Greene \nDate: Wednesday\, September 18\, 2024\nTime: 6:30-8:00 p.m.\nLocation: Montana Natural History Center\nCost: $10 MNHC members\, $15 non-members \nREGISTER HERE. \nOspreys are unique fishing raptors\, and we are lucky they are so abundant along the rivers and lakes in Montana. Since they are at the top of aquatic food chains\, they can tell us a lot about the health of our rivers and streams. In this talk\, we will give an overview of the biology of this fascinating bird\, and tell you about their migration patterns\, longevity\, and summarize our long-term studies on heavy metals in Ospreys\, and what that tells us about the clean-up of the Upper Clark Fork River – largest EPA Superfund site in the US. \nMeet our Guest Speakers \nRob Domenech\, Executive Director: Rob began exploring much of western Montana during the 1990s to locate a suitable site for establishing the first mountaintop raptor migration banding study in Montana. He founded Raptor View Research Institute (RVRI) in 2004 to facilitate this ongoing in-depth research of Golden Eagle and other raptor migration ecology. Rob graduated from the University of Montana in 2002 with a Wildlife Biology degree. When not in the field\, you can find Rob promoting awareness of raptor ecology to youth and community groups. Rob enjoys whitewater kayaking\, snowboarding\, mountain biking\, hiking and bird watching. \nAdam Shreading\, Senior Research Biologist: Adam graduated from the University of Montana in 2009 with a degree in Wildlife Biology. He began working exclusively with raptors in 2007 and has monitored populations of various species across Montana. Adam first came to RVRI as a seasonal field biologist during the fall migration of 2010 and became increasingly involved in our field studies over the next two years. Since becoming a full-time member of our team in August 2012\, Adam has been a valuable asset in the planning\, execution\, and reporting of our field-based activities. \nBrian Busby\, Research Biologist: Brian first joined RVRI as a seasonal field biologist in 2015 after graduating from SUNY ESF with a degree in conservation biology. He left after four years to earn his Master’s in Raptor Biology at Boise State University studying Barn Owls but returned full-time to RVRI in 2024 to help run research projects\, coordinate education programs\, and manage\, analyze\, and publish data. Outside of work\, Brian enjoys spending time either in the mountains or in his vegetable garden. \nErick Greene is Professor Emeritus in the Division of Biological Sciences and in the Wildlife Biology Program at The University of Montana. He grew up in Quebec\, Canada\, with twin passions for music and nature. Erick dropped out of high school and lived for a year in the Galapagos Islands\, working as a researcher on Darwin’s Finches. He then worked on seabirds 800 miles north of the Arctic Circle with the Canadian Wildlife Service. He returned for undergraduate studies at Dalhousie University in Halifax\, Nova Scotia\, where he studied biology\, music and mathematics\, and then received a PhD from Princeton University. SUMMARY:Naturalist Field Day: Explore Primm Meadow
DESCRIPTION:Date: Wednesday\, October 2\nTime: 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.\nLocation: Meet at the Montana Natural History Center. We’ll travel to Primm Meadow in the MNHC bus. \nFeel the majesty of an old-growth\, open stand of ponderosa pines as you explore the history and magnificent ecology of Primm Meadow. This park-like grove has been carefully utilized and managed by humans for thousands of years. Native Americans and homesteaders practiced understory burns to increase productivity of shrubs and crops. The ponderosas thrived in response\, developing a resiliency to larger wildfires. Surrounded by forest that has been logged and replanted or burned\, Primm Meadow is a window back in time. \nSteven Kloetzel\, Western Land Steward for The Nature Conservancy\, will be our guide as we explore this special place. He will discuss restoration work\, fire ecology\, history\, and more. \nDifficulty: Easy/moderate. We will be driving through the gate right to the grove and walking in a loop. We will be walking/standing for up to 2.5 hours. We will have a picnic lunch\, seated on the ground. Insects\, birds\, and mammals have evolved to rely on our native plant communities. We can support the vibrancy of local habitats and survival of fellow species by planting and caring for native plants. During this program you will learn how to make your own seed balls to distribute native seeds! \nFall is the perfect time for native seed planting. Many require the cold snap of winter to germinate in the spring. Seed balls are easy to transport and can be tossed in a garden patch or abandoned weedy area. We will provide directions on creating them and will have materials available for the first 20 people to make one to take home. \nBring your lunch! \nAfter we make the seed balls we will screen a film about plants and pollinators. You will enjoy access to grizzly bear\, great horned owl\, and Tyrannosaurus rex just to name a few. \nMissoula based artist\, Jason C. Poole will start the class by demonstrating drawing techniques particular to skulls and a discussion of anatomical features. As you begin your own study\, Jason will provide both individual and class-wide pointers. This class is perfect for all skill levels. Enjoy a beverage (beer\, or sparkly water) while you work! \nInstructor: Jason C. Poole has worn many hats\, Adjunct Professor of Paleontology\, Scientific Illustrator\, art teacher\, and Paleontology field instructor. Jason has excavated dinosaurs on three continents\, including Africa\, South and North America. Paralititan\, Dreadnoughtus and Suuwassea are three dinosaurs worked on by Poole\, all were new to science when discovered and two of which are supermassive titanosaurs. Take inspiration from our vast collection of specimens to create an animal portrait using the wet felting process. You will cut and layer pre-felted pieces. Water\, soap\, and agitation felt the wool fibers together creating an amazing work of art! These textural pieces can combine the character of the animal along with evocative artistic elements of shape and color. Bring an animal of your choice to life through art. The animals can be full body silhouettes with shapes or faces or even imaginary animals. \nThis class is great for ages 8 and up! \nInstructor: Melissa Thompson is a Missoula based multi-media artist. She received her BFA in drawing from the University of Montana in 1996. She has been a tattoo artist for 24 years\, and in addition\, she is a faux taxidermy maker\, body painter and special effects makeup artist. She received her MA in Prosthetic Effects in 2022 from Falmouth University in Cornwall England. She occasionally teaches these various skills around Missoula\, and exhibits work throughout the country. While obtaining their Bachelor of Science in Biology they worked throughout the backcountry of Montana\, Idaho and Alaska tracking animals and recording plant species until the fall of 2020 when isolation brought back an old love of creating art. Taking inspiration from their wilderness experiences\, they created Up Moss Creek Studio in 2021 as a habitat for experimentation where they combine their knowledge of scientific illustration\, botany\, mycology and multiple art mediums to create realistic figure paintings\, jewelry and art objects that highlight the hidden mossy worlds within western Montana’s diverse ecosystems. They are currently based in the Bitterroot Mountains of Montana where they share a home with their partner Brandon\, dog Dagwood\, and cat Orion. She is not an artist who sticks to the same subject matter for an extended period of time; life is too short for that. Although she does have a main muse–NATURE! Breze prides herself on being a unique artist of many styles in multiple mediums. Her work ranges from animal works to abstract oil paintings and funky graphic drawings. She draws realistic charcoal drawings\, wood-burnings and vibrant landscapes and has created a line of sculpted jewelry. Breze is based in Missoula\, MT and hoping to grow more arms so she can keep creating more and more! INSTAGRAM: @brezeart \nGlasswork by Kate Stone \nKate Stone\nKate Stone balances her career in science and ornithology with artistic pursuits that blend concepts of nature and sustainability. Last summer she started tumbling glass bottles in a solar-powered concrete mixer to create a smooth product quite like sea glass. She sells the glass for use in potted houseplants\, in terrariums and aquariums\, or in succulent gardens. She began combining the glass with dried plants from her garden to create botanical suncatchers and pendants. She’s expanded that work to include other natural items and waste from her home like coffee grounds and tea leaves. Kate will have a variety of glass and botanical products on hand and will share some techniques for integrating plant material into art projects.

No prior experience is necessary. Please just bring your open mind – a willingness to experiment and think in new ways. \nThis refreshing four-hour evening workshop is an invitation to explore both our interior and exterior ecosystems\, paying attention to the quiet or invisible things all around us. We will imagine the different ways in which humans and animals receive and send messages\, and how those messages traverse time and geography. We’ll consider how messages are stored in individual and collective memories\, in landscapes\, and in water. \nWe will discuss the benefit of taking notes – field notes and observations\, as well as notes from our interiors – considering two distinct spheres of noticing. We will explore strategies for “unsticking” our creative selves\, even on the darkest of winter days. Calling on poetry\, science\, images\, and our own imaginations\, we will spiral between internal and external systems\, exploring new forms and sensations in our physical bodies\, our thinking minds\, and our creative work. \nYou can expect to come away with material to spark future writing projects. You will receive a reading and resource list one week before the workshop\, meant to orient you and offer context for our time together. You will leave the workshop connected to an emerging community of local writers and creators. \nInstructor Chandra Brown is an educator\, river guide\, and writer originally from Alaska. She has worked within the realm of river conservation since her 2010 Fulbright grant to Ecuador\, and she founded Freeflow Institute in 2017. Her stories can be found in places like Adventure Journal\, The Dirtbag Diaries\, Kayak Session\, NRS\, and Patagonia. Chandra earned her M.S. in Environmental Studies from the University of Montana and has called Missoula home since 2014. \nLight refreshments provided. Incredible reference specimens from MNHC’s collection including mammals\, birds\, insects\, bone\, horn\, shells\, and rocks will be used for guided practice exercises and longer study time. This class will jumpstart your sketching in January for a year of nature journaling. Discover techniques to bring your drawings to life. Practice with line weight and density\, ratio and perspective\, detail and focus and much more. \n“I have learned that what I have not drawn\, I have never really seen.”- Frederick Franck \nMaterials: We will have everything you need! Plus tea and cocoa! However\, feel free to bring your favorite media to work with. We recommend pencils\, pens\, and a good mixed media or sketch paper. \n\nInstructor: Jason C. Poole has worn many hats\, Adjunct Professor of Paleontology\, Scientific Illustrator\, art teacher\, and Paleontology field instructor.   Jason has excavated dinosaurs on three continents\, including Africa\, South and North America. Paralititan\, Dreadnoughtus and Suuwassea are three dinosaurs worked on by Poole\, all were new to science when discovered and two of which are supermassive titanosaurs. Time to contemplate ice ages and glacial lakes.Time for the Glacial Lake Missoula Chapter of the Ice Age Floods Institute’s Cabin Fever Lecture!  Warm up your curiosity about those iconic strandlines we can see from town with a lecture from renowned geologist James W. Sears. \nNew “LiDAR ” mapping techniques may imply that the famous Lake Missoula strandlines on Mount Sentinel and Mount Jumbo record only one draining of the ice-age lake. The draining coincided with massive erosion at the bottom of the lake\, but passive lowering of lake level at the top\, marked by short-term strandlines cut a few inches into thin colluvial soil on the mountainsides. \nAbout the Instructor: Dr. James W. Sears received his PhD from Queen’s University\, Canada\, in 1979\, and has taught at the University of Montana since 1982. He researches the structure and tectonics of the Rocky Mountain region. Jim has authored dozens of publications and geologic maps.
