Research and write your own Field Note during this workshop-based four-part class!

Instructors:
Allison De Jong, writer, naturalist, and editor of Montana Naturalist magazine and Field Notes on Montana Public Radio
Drew Lefebvre, naturalist, writer, and MNHC’s Museum Programs Coordinator

Field Notes is the Montana Natural History Center’s longest-running program, first airing on Montana Public Radio in 1991 and still going strong 28 years later! Field Notes explores our fascinating observations of the natural world, from how snowfleas survive in winter to the physics of moon dogs and the ecology of Great Gray Owls, river otters, crab spiders, and more. The program is a wonderful opportunity for Montana nature lovers to share their observations and knowledge with the wider community.

In this four-part class, you’ll work with Field Notes editor Allison De Jong, naturalist Drew Lefebvre, and your fellow participants to research, write, and workshop your very own Field Note. We’ll brainstorm ideas; practice writing prompts; discuss tone, style, and research methods; and provide feedback for each other’s Field Notes. For the final class, we’ll take a field trip to the KUFM studios at UM to see where the recording magic happens! While we won’t have time to record your Field Notes during the class, you’ll have the opportunity to record your Field Note at KUFM at a later date, if interested.

This class will be a delightful combination of natural history and creativity. You’ll get to explore a natural history topic of your choice, practice different writing techniques, get and give feedback on your and others’ writing in a small workshop setting, and finish the class with a lovely natural history essay that’s ready to be shared with the Montana Public Radio listening area (if you wish!).

Cost: $60 MNHC members, $65 non-members.

Please ask us about scholarships! We want you to be able to take this class! 406.327.0405.
