Once common throughout northwest Montana, the mountain caribou is now considered one of North America’s most endangered species. Mountain caribou inhabited northwest Montana into the 1980s, while the continental United States lost its last animals in 2019 with the extirpation of the South Selkirk herd along the Idaho-Canadian border. At the same time, the most southern remaining herd, the Central Selkirk, plummeted to only 24 animals.

The Arrow Lakes Caribou Society was formed near Nakusp, British Columbia, to address this decline. One of the primary projects of the organization is a maternal penning project to protect newborn calves and their mothers from environmental pressures during their most vulnerable time.

About the presenter: Cory DeStein is a wildlife photographer and Arrow Lakes Caribou Society board member based in Missoula, Montana. Cory has strived to document the mountain caribou’s story through his photography to inspire others with the same appreciation he has developed for one of North America’s most endangered species. Join Cory to learn more about these grey ghosts of the mountains and the collaborative efforts to save them.
