Naturalist Field Station Exhibit Opening: Drawn to Nature

Art Show featuring Jenah Mead’s fine art graphite illustrations:  Wild is Where You Are

Join MNHC and artist Jenah Mead to celebrate Jenah’s work and the opening of our newest exhibit, The Naturalist Field Station: Drawn to Nature. The new Naturalist Field Station exhibit explores the work of a naturalist as an artist. Jenah’s art show will feature her fine art graphite drawings and the field station features the nature journals that inspired them. The field station is hands-on and has opportunities for visitors to flip through Jenah’s journals, practice her methods, and make their own journal entries.

Jenah Mead is an artist, naturalist, and educator. She combines the study of nature and art to create detailed, graphite drawings of local flora and fauna. Her work is inspired by observations she records in nature journals.

For my “Wild is Where You Are” art show, I explored my connection with nature. For nine weeks, I kept nature journals for three urban natural areas. Each week I recorded my observations in a nature journal specific to that place. I spent an hour in each area, sometimes quietly sitting in the grass by myself and sometimes chasing my toddler through trails and creeks.

I used these journal entries as inspiration for graphite drawings. Even the smallest drawing took me several hours. I found that paying careful attention to each species deepened my admiration for it and the final piece became very personal. My hope is that my work draws the viewer’s attention to that which they often walk right past.” -Jenah Mead
