A group of Montana Master Naturalists watches for birds on a sunny summer day.
Naturalist 101: Base Camp Rock Creek

Spend three days exploring the great Montana outdoors! Our base camp will be along beautiful Rock Creek, a blue ribbon trout stream. Think of it as summer camp for adults! You will come away with some new naturalist knowledge and enviable experiences.

  • Look into the eye of an osprey or marvel at the iridescence of a tree swallow  as you peer through a high-powered scope
  • Examine mammal skulls and dissect owl pellets
  • Learn about the ecological and cultural roles of our trees and flowers
  • Catch butterflies!
  • Get out your journal and use watercolor pencils to record your observations
  • Visit the National Bison Range

The course is taught by MNHC Naturalist Christine Morris and will take place along the Clark Fork river, Rock Creek, and other locations. Long-time educator with the National Bison Range, Pat Jamieson, will be our expert guide to the mammals and birds of the Bison Range.

Our base will be the Confluence Cabin, so named for its location at the confluence of Rock Creek and the Clark Fork River. Want to get in some fly fishing before meeting the class in the morning? Or perhaps take an evening hike along Welcome Creek? Staying overnight at the Rock Creek property is a great way to take full advantage of this gorgeous area. You have the option of staying at the house or camping beside it. See photos of the cabin here.

If you prefer, you may also meet the class each day (Friday and Saturday at Rock Creek, Sunday at MNHC). On Friday we will be traveling by carpool to any distant field sites. On Saturday and Sunday we will be using the MNHC bus. On Friday, June 23rd, we’ll meet at 2:00 at the Montana Natural History Center to carpool out to Rock Creek, and spend the late afternoon in naturalist explorations. On Saturday and Sunday, we’ll be out and about learning and naturalizing from 9:00am-5:00pm, ending the weekend at the Montana Natural History Center at 5:00pm on Sunday.

Food is not included; you’ll be responsible for your own meals. The cabin has a full kitchen, as well as a gas barbecue and fire pit. There is also a small market and restaurant (Elkstrom’s Stage Station) a half mile down the road.

Limited to 12 participants; registration is required. $140 for MNHC members; $150 for non-members.
