In isolating times, lichens can inspire us with the colorful ways they weave the world together. As composite organisms made of two or three species living in partnership, lichens are pioneering, resilient, and astonishingly diverse contributors to biological diversity. They’re often small and always silent, but they shape the formation and succession of entire ecosystems. The Northern Rockies is an exceptional region to be a lichen, and you don’t have to go far to enjoy them. From gravestones to old growth forests, lichens are at work all around us, every day. This class will introduce key ways to identify and appreciate the structure, classification, and ecological roles of lichens, so please join us if you’re ready to learn more about these overlooked heroes of life!

Instructor Rob Rich is a naturalist who conducts biological inventories and offers services in writing, editing, and teaching. He has worked with conservation nonprofits and field-based projects since 2010, and he has published with Earth Island Journal, High Country News, Sierra, and others. Rob is certified through the Montana Master Naturalist and Cybertracker Conservation Wildlife Track & Sign programs, and he holds graduate degrees in natural resources and writing. Drawing on his particular expertise with North America’s water-storing, habitat-diversifying keystone species, Rob coordinates the Montana Beaver Working Group with the National Wildlife Federation.
