Hunting & Gathering Lecture Series: Traditional Wilderness Skills: Brain Tan Buckskin
November 20 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pmFree – $10
Join us for a further exploration of the tradition of hunting and gathering, from food and clothing to the naturalist’s habit of creating collections. Each of our six speakers will share their expertise, from identification and use of the object of the hunt to identifying the landscape or phenology clues that will help hunters and gatherers to find what they’re looking for.
Our final speaker is Joshua Lisbon, Education & Outreach Manager at the MPG Ranch. Joshua has been tanning deer, elk, and antelope for the past 10 years, working to perfect this challenging ancestral skill. He has been studying various traditional wilderness skills since he was a child, and has long been fascinated with how to engage the natural world from this perspective. Join us for his lecture, Traditional Wilderness Skills: Brain Tan Buckskin. Learn how to tan an animal hide using a traditional brain tan method. Joshua will cover wet scrape and hair-off tanning techniques to turn your deer or elk skin into a beautiful, soft, and durable hide.
