VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
The Montana Natural History Center relies upon volunteers to achieve our mission of promoting and cultivating the understanding, appreciation and stewardship of nature through education. We are always looking for good volunteers and celebrate the success of MNHC through many years of volunteerism expertise.
There are many ways to get involved, here are just a few…
- Volunteer Naturalist
Bring natural history to local school kids as a specially trained Volunteer Naturalist for the Visiting Naturalist in the Schools Program.
- Summer Volunteer
Volunteers also help out with our Summer Science Day Camps – a great volunteer opportunity to gain experience working with kids in the outdoor classroom, where No Child is Left Inside
- Outreach and Special Events
Annual events such as RiverFest and Prairie Keepers are exciting ways to engage families in MNHC activities. Other events include and are not limited to the Clark Fork Watershed Festival, the Farmer’s Market, KidsFair at Southgate Mall, KidsFest at Caras Park, University tabling and recruitment, Lolo Watershed Fair, River Awareness Day at the Clark Fork People’s Market, International Wildlife Film Festival WildFest, and Wild Gift Bazaar. - Field Notes/Field Notes for Kids
Research and write Field Notes radio programs aired on Montana Public Radio weekly.
- Exhibits Construction & Maintenance
Give us a hand with maintaining both the Exhibits at the Discovery Center and our traveling displays. Handy with tools? If so, we need your carpentry skills.
- Nature Adventure Garden & Prairie Keepers
Do you have a green thumb or just love to pull weeds? We could use your help! Work in our native plant garden and learn about Montana’s native prairie grasslands. Other opportunities available for other native plant gardens in Missoula, too.

- Nature Discovery Traveling Trunk Maintenance
Assist in keeping our Traveling Trunks well-stocked and ready for use by our local schools. MNHC Nature Discovery Trunk page>>
- Volunteer Receptionist
Help the Montana Natural History Center with answering phones, greeting visitors, assisting with sales and memberships, and registration for MNHC’s exciting programs.
- Development Assistance
Help the Montana Natural History Center with various administrative tasks in development.
- Ralph Lee Allen Environmental Education Library
Help the Montana Natural History Center with ongoing maintenance and upkeep of this valuable teaching resource>
