INTRODUCTION

The following is a list of traveling teaching trunks available in the Northern Rockies. Part I includes a description of trunk contents, the intended grade levels, and contacts to obtain the materials. Part II provides a quick reference guide to which trunks are available in each area. Part III lists the various locations of trunks that have multiple copies.

Referred to as trunks, boxes, or kits, these resource materials come in a variety of box sizes. Note carefully that some kits are for pick-up only; others can be shipped. Trunks that are still being developed are marked with a * symbol.


PART I: TRUNK DESCRIPTIONS

ASTRONOMY AND SPACE

Blue Sky Below My Feet

A video series of actual space footage and scenes of space experiments, focusing on the topics of food, fibers, and forces. Includes hands-on activities that are fast-paced and entertaining. Designed to show younger students the various aspects of space science.

Living in Space

Space produces different living conditions than Earth. This trunk was created to demonstrate how astronauts accomplish their daily routines and conduct the work that needs to be completed during their mission. This trunk contains the best of NASA's curricular guides, videos, slide sets, and CD-ROMs. Also included are several "stand alone" tabletop activities with all of the models, toys, and materials necessary to help students actively learn about space.

Planets

The Sun has a family of very different planets. Learn about the rocky and gaseous planets of our solar system. Discover their similarities and differences. Also in this trunk, learn about the current investigations and exciting new views of the planets and their satellites. This trunk contains the best of NASA's curricular guides, videos, slide sets, and CD-ROMs. Also included are several "stand alone" tabletop activities with all of the models, toys, and materials necessary to help students actively learn about space.

Rockets!

For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. How does a rocket take off from Earth? How does it stay in space? The principles of rocketry, especially Newton's third law, will be examined as well as the launching of simple rockets in this trunk. This trunk contains the best of NASA's curricular guides, videos, slide sets, and CD-ROMs. Also included are several "stand alone" tabletop activities with all of the models, toys, and materials necessary to help students actively learn about space.

Space Exploration

Over the past 30 years, spacecraft and other tools have helped us discover a great deal about stars, planets, and other mysteries of space. In this trunk we’ll explore the past, present, and future of space exploration. The techniques and strategies for exploring our space environment and possibilities for future space exploration will also be examined. This trunk contains the best of NASA's curricular guides, videos, slide sets, and CD-ROMs. Also included are several "stand alone" tabletop activities with all of the models, toys, and materials necessary to help students actively learn about space.

Starlab

Students can take a look at the night sky in detail at any season or latitude in a Starlab traveling planetarium. The planetarium comes complete with audiotapes and astronomy programs on the northern sky and constellations visible at each season. Additional cylinders on Greek and Native American star myths, the biological cell, and plate tectonics are available on a limited basis.

Telescope Trunk

Capture students’ interest in the "Big Sky" using a Telescope Trunk from the Museum. The Telescope Trunk contains an easy-to-use 4 inch Edmund Astroscan telescope, star charts, and activities on astronomy and the sky.

Amerikanuak! A Collection of Basque Treasures

Students explore Basque culture, past and present, with artifacts, clothing, a flag, cards, music, and curriculum packet. The trunk is available for a maximum of three weeks.

Bannack Homesteading

This trunk covers the early years at Bannack, Montana’s First Territorial Capital. It includes old books, artifacts, clothing, and activities designed to allow children the opportunity to participate in homesteading type activities.

Bannack Mining

This trunk includes equipment, activities and artifacts depicting the gold mining history in Bannack. The activities cover hard rock mining, placer mining, and the lives of miners and prospectors.

Columbia Plateau Culture Box

For 10,000 years Native Americans have worked, played, and lived in the Columbia River Plateau. Learn about the resilient, resourceful culture of the Columbia Plateau people through artifacts and stories of everyday life. Includes artifacts and activity guide. The Cowboy Artist: A View of Montana History

Over 40 Charles M. Russell prints, a slide show, cowboy songs, and hands-on artifacts are used as a window into Montana history. This footlocker will discuss Russell’s art and how he interpreted aspects of Montana history, including the Lewis and Clark expedition, cowboy and western life, and Montana’s Indians. Students will learn art appreciation skills and learn how to interpret paintings, in addition to creating their own watercolor masterpieces on Montana history topics. Includes curriculum packet. Available in January 2002.

Discover the Corps of Discovery: The Lewis and Clark Expedition in Montana

Earthworks!

Travel through 4.5 billion years of Earth’s history as you explore the activities and materials in Earthworks! Rocks, fossils, models, books, games, videos and other software available in this trunk will help students discover the early landscapes of life forms of the Northern Rocky Mountain region. Pre-visit and post-visit activities are available in a teacher’s manual as well as a CD-ROM highlighting Landforms/Life forms which will assist you in preparing your class for a trip to the Museum of the Rockies.

Frontier Cowboy Trunk

This trunk focuses on the American cowboy in the 1880s to 1890s. The cattle drive and cowboy life are explored through books, photos, clothing, and a curriculum. Available for two weeks at a time.

The Fur Trade

The Fur Trade in the American West

Adventure into the world of fur trappers and traders who explored the American West. Students examine pelts, a trap, trade items like fish hooks, hawk bells, Chinese coins, and trapper supplies like flint and steel, a powder horn. Three week maximum.

Lewis and Clark Expedition Trunk

This trunk is designed to supplement an educational unit on the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Some items included are: wool blanket, beaver skin, Jefferson peace medals, grizzly claw replicas, writing utensils, and trade items. The trunk also includes a tinder box, powder horn, river man’s cap, moccasins, buckskin and sinew, and tin utensils, as well as two videos, maps, and a variety of books.

The Life and Times of Buffalo Bill

Devoted to William F. Cody, this trunk contains objects/reproductions that illustrate Buffalo Bill’s role in the settlement of the West from his early days as a Pony Express rider and fur trapper to his service to the U.S. Army as a guide and scout to his career as a world-renowned entertainer. There is also a slide program with script, dime novel, laminated posters, teacher manual, and activities for children. Three duplicate trunks available for distribution.

Plains Indian Artifact Trunk

This trunk includes a curriculum guide and a collection of artifact reproductions. The collection includes bone and stone tools, a painted robe, leather

carrying cases, a war shield and arrows – items common to the tribes of Montana during the height of the buffalo culture. The curriculum guide introduces students to Montana’s Native American heritage and provides teachers and students with a historical and cultural context for the artifact reproductions through subject materials, activities, and legends.

Music and dance have long been central to American Indian cultures, and today’s powwow is a celebration of that heritage. It also provides opportunities for social interaction among Indian people. Trading Post Box

Grab a script and a costume and come explore 1880s Wenatchee. This lively play introduces your group to the fur traders, Native Americans, Chinese miners, and settlers who come through Wenatchee’s first business, the Miller-Freer Trading Post. Includes a

Thundering Hooves Trunk

The horse has become associated with the American West and, along with the buffalo, remains a symbol of a bygone era. Cowboys and the Plains Indians depended on the horse for their livelihoods, for transportation, and as part of their cultural identity. Objects focus on the cowboy and Indian use of horses and the trunk includes an Indian saddle model, a child’s "western pleasure" saddle, horse grooming tools, a dance stick shaped as a horse, quirts, and more, as well as a teacher manual. Trappers, Traders, and Trailblazers: Mountain Men in the Rocky Mountain West Trunk

Mountain men—the name conjures up vivid images of rugged individualists who traveled, explored, and lived in the Rocky Mountains in search of beaver. The reproductions (clothes, possibles bag, disabled flintlock rifle, trap beaver pelt…), teacher manual, classroom activities, and game included in this trunk are designed to make this fascinating periods of US history come alive for students of all ages. The Treasure Chest: A Look at the Montana State Symbols

The Grizzly Bear, the Cutthroat Trout, the Sapphire and all of the other state symbols are an important connection to Montana’s history. Appreciating Nature’s Services

This trunk studies the goods that nature provides us, and the goods we harvest for diversity in our daily lives as well as looking at protection and maintenance of watershed services. It also studies the characteristics of and services that soil provides and the joys nature provides. It contains an activity guide, a variety of natural objects and education materials. Maps, video and audio cassettes, as well as a CD-ROM provide instructions for a series of minds and hands-on learning activities.

Cave and Geology Trunk and Curriculum Guide

This trunk is designed for classroom use and can be used in conjunction with a field trip to Lewis and Clark Caverns. The trunk includes two videos, books, hard hat, carbide lamp, climbing gear, rock samples, speleothems, poster, and a cave mapping game. A curriculum is included.

Clark Fork/Pend Oreille Watershed Kit

Seeks to provide students with a sense of the complexity of the CF/PO watershed. A table-sized map and a set of wooden figures help to tell of an imaginary journey in which children visit sites throughout the watershed and meet historical characters whose lives were dependent on water in various ways. Curriculum guide and multimedia materials provide activities for the students.

Coram Experimental Forest

This box helps teachers and others prepare students for a visit to the Coram Experimental Forest on the Flathead National Forest in northwest Montana. The box contains a three-ring binder with suggested lessons and activities to learn about the forest’s natural resources, research, and management. Materials in the box include "Walk with Larch" trail guides, map of area, aerial photos, tree cross-section, assorted environmental education curricula, books and videos.

Conserving the Diversity of Life

This trunk studies extinction rates, past and present, processes, and consequences of extinction. It looks at the causes of reduced biodiversity, and the effects of personal lifestyles on nature. It contains an activity guide, a variety of natural objects and education materials. Maps, video and audio cassettes, as well as a CD-ROM provide instructions for a series of minds and hands-on learning activities.

Ecosystem Matters

The curriculum has numerous lessons and information on wildlife and ecosystems through the use of books, videos, posters, activity guides, brochures, and puppets. Students and teachers will understand how we all relate to each other and the earth’s natural resources.

Forestry Box

This box is designed for use in conjunction with an interpretive trail in the Wenatchee National Forest in Washington state. It includes a teacher script, student study questions, and hands-on activities that teach about disease, forest succession, habitat, geology and topography of Washington. A three-part slide show examines forest ecosystems, forest disturbances and land management issues. Through pre-and post work activities, students examine management scenarios, learn debating skills, and implement community service projects.

Forestry Trunk

Collection of reference materials, suggested activities and hands-on tools for learning about forests and trees. Groundwater Flow Model

Groundwater Flow Models (GWFM) are used to demonstrate groundwater movement principles. A model, constructed with a clear plexiglass front, allows observers to watch how ground-water moves and is affected by wells, sediment layers, streams, ect. GWFM’s demonstrate two aquifer types: an unconfined aquifer of white sand just below the surface, and a confined aquifer at the bottom of the model. Dyes are used to show water movement patterns and as tracers showing contaminated water migration. Comes with model, user’s manual, video, activity guide, and reference books. Teachers, 4-H leaders, adult education, civic planning meetings, and

recourse professionals can benefit by using GWFM’s.

Montana Sustainable Agriculture: Farming with Foresight

This curriculum, developed by the Alternative Energy Resource Organization (AERO) and funded by Montana Department of Natural Resources, provides over 30 educational activities. Sections include food production, sustainable agriculture, history of Montana agriculture, soil, weeds and insects, fertility, diversity, livestock, and the future of Montana agriculture. Curriculum can be used alone, with a video, with the traveling trunk, or in conjunction with actual farm tours.
