The Montana Natural History Center is your base camp for discovery.

Note our Fall/Winter Hours:  Tuesday – Friday from noon – 5 pm and Saturdays noon to 4 pm.  Bring your family to enjoy fun activities and natural history exploration each Saturday, and admission for MNHC Members is always free.

 Saturday Kids Activities

Join us each Saturday at 2 pm for exciting children’s programs at MNHC. Free with admission! Great for children ages 5 and up; must be accompanied by an adult.  Be prepared to go outside in any weather. Programs run about an hour and a half.

What’s the difference between bison and buffalo?  Why are bison so important? We’ll read stories, look at specimens, and do an art project.

 Saturday Discovery Days – March 3, 2007    1pm – 4 pm

The Alpine and the Arctic: Tracing the Connections between Montana and the Arctic with Chuck Jonkel
Small donation requested

 Join Dr. Chuck Jonkel as he leads a field trip on how climate changes in the arctic could affect Montana. He will detail the mix of arctic and alpine species in the Missoula Valley. You will learn the language of the arctic. Dress to be outside and bring binoculars!

 Dr. Chuck Jonkel is the Great Bear Foundation president. He has worked in the Canadian high arctic and sub-arctic and Svalbard, north of Norway, studying polar bears and global warming. He was chair of the High Arctic Biosphere Reserves Committee in the early 1970’s.

 Monthly Lecture Series - Wednesday March 14, 2007

Ice Age Mammals of the Pacific Northwest Featuring Ian Lange
7 pm MNHC
Free and open to public – small donation optional

 Ian Lange is a retired professor of Economic Geology at the University of Montana. In his talk he will detail the animals believed to have lived in Montana during the Ice Age.  He will also discuss what the Pleistocene was like and recount various theories on the extinction of these great beasts.
 
After the talk there will be yummy free refreshments donated by many local businesses.

This event is hosted by the Glacial Lake Missoula Chapter of the Ice Age Floods Institute and the
Montana
Natural History Center.

 SPRING BREAK DAY CAMP FOR KIDS!!!

Nature Detectives Spring Break Camp

 For students in 3rd through 5th grade

March 26-30, 2007 from 9:00-4:00 Extended drop off hours from 8-9 and pick up from 4-5

The Nature Detectives spring break day camp will have students exploring nature through games, arts and crafts, and activities in science!  Students will study plants and animals native to our region and explore local natural areas under the guidance of our Visiting Naturalist in the Schools instructors.  Space is limited so register early!  $25 non refundable deposit is required for registration.  Contact us at 406-327-0405 to register or for more information.

 Summer Camp Positions Available!

The Montana Natural History Center is hiring camp staff to lead our Summer Science Day Camp programs this June-August!  MNHC’s day camps are fun, dynamic and a fantastic opportunity to build skills in teaching field-based environmental or natural history education.  For job descriptions, qualifications and program time line, please visit our website http://www.montananaturalist.org/support/internships.htm.  Staff positions are internships with a stipend and can be taken for university credit.  The application deadline is February 19th.  Contact Lisa Moore at the Montana Natural History Center for more information or to apply
