January 2006 at the Montana Natural History Center
What’s happening outside Cold weather is still ahead but the days
will start getting longer! Huge flocks of snow geese and swans are still moving
through Missoula at high altitudes, usually just before the cold fronts. Owls
will begin to hoot as it is the beginning of their mating season. Active winter
decomposers would be housefly maggots, tree bracket fungi, molds, bark and wood
boring beetles and earthworms. Grizzly and black bear cubs are being born while
female bears are in hibernation! Mule deer are shedding antlers.
