Community Activities

Community activities offer engaging, entertaining, and  educational opportunities for all ages to get outside and learn about the natural world. Whether you choose Saturday Discovery Days–featuring workshops and field trips that take you outside to explore the natural history of Missoula and the surrounding areas–or our Evening Lecture Series–presenting a range of topics from shrews, to grizzlies, to supernovas–you’ll be rewarded with a quality learning experience, guided by local scientists and naturalists.

New this year we are offering community workshops at Fort Missoula Native Plant Gardens. Fully equipped with a garden classroom this beautiful space is the perfect learning lab for a diverse array native plant themed topics. Instructors demonstrate seed collecting methods, assist with water-wise landscape design, provide hands-on practice transplanting perennials, and even lead holiday wreath workshops.  Our family friendly Summer Volunteer Work days are wonderful opportunities to enjoy the garden while learning alongside botanists.

We also offer many programs for children, including our Saturday Kids’ Activities, our bi-monthly miniNaturalist program for preschoolers, and seasonal free family events enabled by a  partnership with the Missoula Children and Nature Network.

Perhaps you are hungry for a more in-depth knowledge of nature; if so, the Montana Master Naturalist Class will help you develop the skills and tools to become a master naturalist. In this course you will explore natural areas and learn the natural history of Montana’s flora and fauna from local experts.

Whatever your preference, you are bound to find an activity that will inspire you to get out and get involved with nature!
